Some Interesting Facts About Multiple DUIs

Don't Drive and Drink SymbolWhen someone receives his or her 3rd, 5th, or 10th DUI, people in the local community seem to get outraged.  Here’s something that apparently not too many people realize.  If a person is alcohol dependent and he or she drives a vehicle, chances are very high that this person is driving under the influence virtually every time he or she drives his or her vehicle.

Why is this?  The mission and the goal of the alcoholic is to drink throughout the day so he or she can avoid the alcohol withdrawal symptoms that will take place if he or she stops drinking.  If there was a doable way to test the alcoholic’s blood alcohol level every time he or she drives, an alcoholic could theoretically receive multiple DUIs on a daily basis.  Think about this the next time you get outraged about someone getting multiple DUIs in a 5 or 10-year period of time.  The point in this discussion: the “true” number of people who drive ”under the influence” is vastly under reported and perhaps greatly underestimated in the alcoholism and the DOT drunk driving statistics.
