DUI. U.S. drivers continue to drink and drive and receive DUI arrests in spite of stricter laws and the efforts of the police and activist groups like MADD.

I live in Florida. I got a DUI last spring (April). My attorney is trying to get me out of it, and personally I think, why should he? I was driving under the influence.
This whole thing still hasn’t blown over. What should I do, give me some advice.
I never drink and drive, it was just that one time and of course I got caught.

Well, you have already paid him all the money right? Or does he keep charging more as you go? Seems like it should be over with by now so maybe that is a good sign tho. If its your first one you dont have too much to worry about anyways. You shouldnt be doing any jail time. Just fines, classes, counseling, loss of license and maybe having to get special insurance to get it back. At least you learned your lesson.

My idiot sons father got his THIRD DUI in FL right before Christmas and might be getting off probation already this week. He got a lawyer and got lucky with NO jail time and basically the same punishement as a first timer. He better have learned his lesson. I already moved to NC with our son and he is planning on moving here as soon as he finds out if he is off probation early or not. He wont be living with me tho (not that you care, lol). Sharon was a problem drinker who had just received her third “driving under the influence” arrest.  When Sharon went before the court, the Judge told her that her drinking behavior was unpardonable and as a consequence, he was going to sentence her to serve four months in jail.

Angela had a “party mentality” ever since she graduated from college ten years ago.  Since she had involved herself in hazardous and irresponsible drinking on a fairly regular basis over the past ten years, moreover, drinking was almost as natural to Angela as waking up every morning.

Damon called his friend Brett and told him that he is really starting to feel the effects of alcohol abuse.  When he said this, Brett asked him what he meant.  “I feel lethargic every morning when I awaken, I am very easily irritated, I’m spending a boat-load of money on booze, I just received my second DUI in the past three months, and my body is falling apart.  Where can I get some quality help?”  Brett thought for a few moments and then said that he could do a number of things.

Tina was the office manager for a small paint manufacturing company.  When it came to partying, Tina was a staunch conservative.  For instance, no one at the office ever saw her attend the office parties during the holidays or ever go to happy hour after work.  Indeed, no one ever suspected that Tina did much of anything but work and go home to her three cats.

It must have come as a great surprise to everyone at the office when they came to work one Friday morning to find out that Tina was not at her desk.  To make matters worse, news quickly spread around the office that Tina was arrested for driving “under the influence” the previous evening and spent the night in the local jail.

After all, wasn’t a DUI arrest one of the negative effects of alcohol that happened to alcoholics and alcohol abusers and not to people like Tina?  It looks like Tina fooled everyone at work about her drinking problem but herself.

Continuing to drink after it causes you to shirk your responsibilities at home, school, or at work; drive while you are “under the influence;” get in trouble with the law (for example, getting arrested for a DUI); or miss work is alcohol abuse.

You are also involving yourself in alcohol abuse if your drinking causes problems in your finances, your health, or in your relationships.  If you are exhibiting any of these drinking problems, why not get alcohol treatment before you run the risk of becoming alcohol dependent?

I went to a car dealer’s customer appreciation party today.  There was plenty of food and plenty liquid refreshments including soda, bottled water, and bud lite.  I noticed that most of the people drank responsibly but there were a few guys who just couldn’t get enough of the “free” beer.  In fact, I’m sure that a few of the guys got a real good “buzz” from drinking many cans of beer.

At one point, one of the guys who was drinking quite heavily asked me if I wanted a beer.  The funny part is that he knows that I don’t drink.  I think he was just testing me to see if I would “give in” and have a beer.  I declined his offer and then told him how thankful I was that I don’t drink because I never have to worry about getting a DUI or suffer from alcohol poisoning and I know that I am not ruining my health from abusive drinking.

To be honest, since I stopped drinking I actually miss the “mellow” feeling from having a few beers.  And I can honesty say that probably the absolute best time I can remember was when I got drunk one night at a local bar about twenty years ago and had the fun of my life.

But now that I am older, I know that drinking irresponsibly has terrible consequences and that getting drunk on a regular basis can help a person make the transition from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction.  Because I choose not to deal with anything that is related to addiction, it is just easier for me to totally refrain from drinking.

Sure, I miss the “buzz” from drinking a few beers but I also treasure the great feeling I now have knowing that I don’t have to worry about DUIs, alcohol-related traffic accidents, hangovers, or ANY alcohol-related problems.

How do you know if you have a drinking problem?  Even if you drink infrequently, if your drinking is causing any problems in your health, in your finances, in your relationships, in your work or school performance, or with the law (receiving a DUI for instance), then you have a drinking problem.  And if you have a drinking problem, it is best to address this problem by seeking alcohol treatment.

What a waste it is to involve yourself in chronic alcohol abuse or alcoholism.  Not only does excessive and hazardous drinking deplete a person’s finances, but it wrecks havoc with relationships, it leads to poor work and school performance, it often results in problems with the law (a DUI for instance), and it leads to poor health.  There is absolutely no positive reason for excessive and abusive drinking.  For this reason, if you abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent, please get the professional alcohol treatment you need.

Around two years ago an Ohio man received his twelfth DUI.  The saddest part of this is that his latest DUI resulted in the death of two Hiram college students.  When this happened, people were outraged that someone with multiple DUIs somehow, someway continued to drive while under the influence.

Let’s step back for a moment and think about this.  Certainly twelve DWIs is an unbelievable number, but if a person is a chronic alcohol abuser or an alcoholic and routinely drives, he or she could quite possibly receive multiple DUIs EVERY DAY of the week because he or she drinks numerous times during the day.  This is why mandatory alcohol treatment for people who receive a DUI is an excellent idea.

In some states, a key component of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face-to-face with victims who tell their heartrending stories of how a person arrested for “driving under the influence” forever changed their lives.

The rationale for this kind of interaction is this:  personalizing the suffering and anguish that drinking and driving can cause just may convince the offender to stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking.

This is obviously one creative way to address abusive drinking and the damage that results from the thoughtless and hazardous drinking behavior of a problem drinker.

According to the DMV statistical research findings, one out of every 130 licensed drivers in the United States has been arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics or alcohol.  One out of 130 doesn’t sound like a terribly big number until you think this through a little.  For instance, if there are 130 million licensed drivers in the United States then one million of these drivers have been arrested for “driving under the influence.”

Here’s another way to look at this.  Picture driving on a turnpike.  Approximately one driver in every 130 vehicles that you see has been involved in a DUI.  Does anyone need any more evidence to substantiate the claim that alcohol abuse and alcoholism are major problems in the U.S.?
