Oldest youth inmate soon to be released
Sometime in the next several weeks, Donald Gerald Schmidt, the oldest inmate in the California Youth Authority system, will likely learn when and where he will be released. I wonder if he will immediately turn to drugs and alcohol. After all, he was surrounded by a group of inmates, many of whom were losers: drug or alcohol abusers. If so, he will clearly need alcohol abuse, drug abuse, or substance abuse treatment.

What role do our cultural and societal structures play in perpetuating drug abuse?
What role do our cultural and societal structures play in perpetuating drug abuse?
Obviously, value systems in society determine what behaviors are acceptable and what aren’t. For the most part, the general consensus in America is that drug use is not just bad, but really bad, so much so that it is illegal and should stay that way. This is partly the result of a social viewpoint that has been pounded into us our whole lives, partly because of religious beliefs, and partly due to observations of the negative effects of drug abuse. Also, there are a variety of social realities that drives people to drug use. This is kind of a complex question, but that’s my short response.

When an addict abruptly stops taking the alcohol and/or drugs to which he or she is addicted, the brain triggers “messages” that are sent to the addict, essentially informing him or her that that something is terribly wrong and needs to be remedied. The “messages” that the brain sends to the drug addict or to the alcoholic consist of several uncomfortable, painful, and potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms that can, in extreme instances, result in a fatality if the person doesn’t once again start using the drugs or alcohol to which he or she is addicted or if the individual doesn’t immediately receive the appropriate medical treatment.
Something in this statement is usually “missed” by most people regarding addiction: the daily “mission” of the alcoholic or the drug addict is to drink enough alcohol or take enough drugs to avoid the withdrawal symptoms that will surely transpire if the person stops ingesting the alcohol or taking the drugs to which he or she is addicted.

Of the 20 or so million Americans in 2006 who needed professional drug or alcohol abuse treatment and did not receive it, only 940,000 reported that they thought they needed treatment.
Stated another way, on a yearly basis, the vast majority of people in the U.S. who need alcohol and/or drug abuse treatment do not believe they need this treatment.

Chemical dependency research has shown that youth between the ages of 12 and 17 who smoke cigarettes are more than 8 times more likely to engage in illicit drug use and more than 17 times more likely to drink abusively when compared with teens and pre-teens who do not smoke.
While any “causal” relationships such as smoking causes drug and alcohol abuse in teens cannot be made, this research does, nevertheless, highlight the correlation that exists between teen smoking and teenage alcohol abuse and teen drug abuse.
What will probably be discovered with further research is that these three unhealthy activities all have an influence on one another. Stated differently, teenage smoking influences teen drug and alcohol abuse, teen drug abuse influences teenage alcohol abuse and smoking, and teen alcohol abuse influences teen smoking and drug abuse.
The bottom line: to avoid substance abuse in their pre-adult years, neither teens nor pre-teens should take drugs, smoke, or drink alcohol. Indeed, smoking and drinking are illegal for individuals who are not adults and taking illicit drugs is illegal for everyone in our society. Obviously, these facts are not making a strong enough impression on the smoking, drinking, and drug taking actions of many teens and pre-teens in our society.

According to the drug and alcohol abuse research literature, for every dollar that is spent on drug and alcohol treatment, the United States economy saves several dollars in healthcare and other related costs. Maybe the key point is this: by applying a long-term outlook and developing and implementing alcohol and drug treatment programs in our places of employment, in our social service agencies, and in our schools, it is likely that the financial drain on our society caused by alcohol and drug abuse can be substantially reduced.
More importantly, perhaps, the incalculable costs of lost lives due to alcohol and drug abuse will be considerably reduced as fewer individuals lose their lives to drinking and drug abuse problems.
