Multiple DUIs Lead to Jail Time for a Problem Drinker

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

lady upset with her abusive drinkingSharon was a problem drinker who had just received her third “driving under the influence” arrest.  When Sharon went before the court, the Judge told her that her drinking behavior was unpardonable and as a consequence, he was going to sentence her to serve four months in jail.

While in jail, Sharon would be required to get alcohol treatment and learn more about alcohol abuse and alcoholism, binge drinking, and the adverse outcomes of abusive and excessive drinking.

The judge highlighted the fact that unless Sharon gets professional alcohol rehab and learns how to live in an alcohol-free manner, she would be spending a considerable amount of time in jail.  Sharon seemed to understand but told the judge that she still believed that jail was not the proper punishment.  The judge disagreed, saying that it was his responsibility to keep drinkers who receive multiple DUIs off the roads.

Stricter State Laws for Repeat DUI Arrests

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

happy hour sign at a barMany state legislatures have passed stricter laws for people who receive repeat “driving under the influence” convictions.  For instance, getting a “hardship” license in order to go back and forth to work is getting more difficult, the fines have increased, mandatory jail time for repeat offenders is often required, and the length of time for license suspensions has increased.

I think the message is clear:  don’t drink and drive and learn how to drink in moderation and more responsibly.  And if you don’t, the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with you and “punish” you.

Avoiding Insurance Premium Increases

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

man driving his car in thought about his alcohol abuseThe following represents one of the best ways to avoid an increase in your insurance premiums:  use a designated driver or call a taxi when you are away from home and you are drinking.  Simply put, don’t get behind the wheel while you are intoxicated.  These suggestions are much cheaper in the long run and lead to far fewer alcohol related problems such as traffic accidents, “driving under the influence” offenses, or traffic fatalities.

Alcohol-Related Accidents in the U.S.

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Hospital Sign for Alcohol Related AccidentsAn estimated 600,000 U.S. people are injured each year in alcohol-related crashes.  Given the extent to which people in this country drink, this statistic is not in the least surprising.

From a different perspective, try to imagine the needless frustration, suffering, and pain that at least 600,000 people go through EVERY year in our country due to alcohol-related accidents.  When are we as a society going to wake up and stop driving while under the influence of alcohol?

Some Interesting Facts About Multiple DUIs

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Don't Drive and Drink SymbolWhen someone receives his or her 3rd, 5th, or 10th DUI, people in the local community seem to get outraged.  Here’s something that apparently not too many people realize.  If a person is alcohol dependent and he or she drives a vehicle, chances are very high that this person is driving under the influence virtually every time he or she drives his or her vehicle.

Why is this?  The mission and the goal of the alcoholic is to drink throughout the day so he or she can avoid the alcohol withdrawal symptoms that will take place if he or she stops drinking.  If there was a doable way to test the alcoholic’s blood alcohol level every time he or she drives, an alcoholic could theoretically receive multiple DUIs on a daily basis.  Think about this the next time you get outraged about someone getting multiple DUIs in a 5 or 10-year period of time.  The point in this discussion: the “true” number of people who drive ”under the influence” is vastly under reported and perhaps greatly underestimated in the alcoholism and the DOT drunk driving statistics.

Questions for People Who Continue to Drive While Under the Influence

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Attention people who have received multiple DUIs and who continue to drive while under the influence:  When are you going to stop putting the lives of other people in jeopardy?   When are you going to stop playing Russian roulette with your vehicle?  When are you going to wake up and start contributing to society instead of being a loser?

Multiple DUIs and Alcohol Treatment

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Around two years ago an Ohio man received his twelfth DUI.  The saddest part of this is that his latest DUI resulted in the death of two Hiram college students.  When this happened, people were outraged that someone with multiple DUIs somehow, someway continued to drive while under the influence.

Let’s step back for a moment and think about this.  Certainly twelve DWIs is an unbelievable number, but if a person is a chronic alcohol abuser or an alcoholic and routinely drives, he or she could quite possibly receive multiple DUIs EVERY DAY of the week because he or she drinks numerous times during the day.  This is why mandatory alcohol treatment for people who receive a DUI is an excellent idea.

A Creative Way to Reduce Drinking and Driving

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

In some states, a key component of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face-to-face with victims who tell their heartrending stories of how a person arrested for “driving under the influence” forever changed their lives.

The rationale for this kind of interaction is this:  personalizing the suffering and anguish that drinking and driving can cause just may convince the offender to stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking.

This is obviously one creative way to address abusive drinking and the damage that results from the thoughtless and hazardous drinking behavior of a problem drinker.

The Prevalence of Driving Under the Influence in the U.S.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

According to the DMV statistical research findings, one out of every 130 licensed drivers in the United States has been arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics or alcohol.  One out of 130 doesn’t sound like a terribly big number until you think this through a little.  For instance, if there are 130 million licensed drivers in the United States then one million of these drivers have been arrested for “driving under the influence.”

Here’s another way to look at this.  Picture driving on a turnpike.  Approximately one driver in every 130 vehicles that you see has been involved in a DUI.  Does anyone need any more evidence to substantiate the claim that alcohol abuse and alcoholism are major problems in the U.S.?

Driving Under the Influence is Linked With Age

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Many alcohol abuse and alcoholism research studies have demonstrated the fact that “driving under the influence” of an illegal drug or alcohol is positively associated with age until the age of 22.  For example, in 2006, an estimated 7.3 percent of U.S. 16-year-olds drove under the influence.  This percentage increased progressively and reached a high mark of 31.8 percent among 22-year-olds who drove under the influence.

Alcoholism and alcohol abuse research also reveals that beyond the age of 22, these percentages diminished with increasing age.  When evaluating this information more deeply, it becomes clear that the critical age group to target regarding drug and alcohol abuse educational and preventative attempts is the group of individuals between the ages of 16 and 22 and younger.  Apparently, comprehensive educational and preventative efforts need to reach this age group if “driving under the influence” statistics are to become reduced substantially.  Not only this but drug and alcohol testing in workplaces and in schools can also be used to screen and test for drug and alcohol abuse by this age group.
