Cindy was watching a special on cable TV about the short term and the long term effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. As Cindy watched the program she started to think about her drinking behavior.
Could she become a moderate drinker rather than getting drunk a few times every month? Are her terrible hangovers a symptom of a serious drinking problem? Did she abuse alcohol on a fairly regular basis? Will she become alcohol dependent like her uncle? Is her binge drinking a sign of chronic alcohol abuse? Does she need to get alcohol treatment for her problem drinking?
While the focal point of Cindy’s attention was on the long term outcomes of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, she also began to think about the short term effects of excessive drinking.
She reasoned that by centering her attention only on the long term consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, she might ignore what is taking place in her “drinking” behavior in the here-and-now.
To her credit, Cindy actually began to think about and do something positive about her current drinking issues so that she would not have to address more significant problems in the future.

Sally has been a marketing manager for an exclusive advertising agency for twelve years. Eight of those years she has been married to Randy. Sally and Randy have two daughters, Cindy and Janet. Sally has taken on some extra responsibilities at the office and, as a result, she has had substantially less time to spend with her family.
At first, Randy observed that Sally frequently came home from work after their young daughters went to sleep for the night. Then Randy perceived that Sally’s business suits strongly smelled from alcohol. When Sally began to have a hard time getting up each morning and usually awoke with a terrible headache, Randy began to wonder if Sally was manifesting some of the symptoms of alcoholism.
One Saturday evening after the girls went to bed, Randy decided to express his concerns about Sally’s drinking. At first Sally was very defensive. As Randy kept on telling Sally how much he cared for her and for her health, however, Sally eventually “came clean” and stated that she too is worried about her drinking behavior and that she would like to schedule an appointment to discuss her problem drinking with their family doctor.
Even though this didn’t solve the immediate issues Sally was experiencing, at the very least it was a step in the right direction.

Vern was a hard-working plumbing contractor who recently began to feel the adverse effects of alcohol abuse each day when he got up for work. Sure, he almost always had a lot of fun while drinking with his friends, but lately he had begun to feel very lethargic and tired every morning when he awakened.
Like a lot of men, Vern didn’t do much about his problem drinking until something made him address his drinking behavior. In Vern’s case, this “change agent” was a much younger woman that he began dating.
Realizing that his partying was draining his energy, had helped him gain about ten unwanted pounds, and lowered his self concept in the process, he quit drinking and started exercising every morning before going to work. Within three or four weeks, he noticed that his energy level had returned, he lost a few pounds, and felt more self esteem when he went out with his new girlfriend.
Fortunately, some people “get it” and do something positive about their adverse alcohol abuse effects. In Vern’s situation, his new girlfriend was the trigger for him to stop drinking, to get into a physical fitness routine, and to begin living in a healthier manner.

Bill and Colin worked together on a commercial roofing crew. One day at lunch, Bill and Colin started to discuss their drinking behavior. As stated by Bill, “Colin, I realize that we drink a lot more than we should but there are certain individuals who drink most of their lives and still live to be ninety-years-old or older.”
Colin agreed but then asked the following, “I wonder if these individuals drank in moderation or if they, like us, were heavy drinkers? And if they were excessive and abusive drinkers, how did they avoid the adverse effects of alcohol abuse or alcoholism?
Some individuals are born with stronger constitutions and are healthier than other people. To verify this, just consider some of the people who smoke two or more packs of cigarettes every day and still make it to ninety-years-old compared to other heavy smokers who never see their fiftieth birthday. I would think that a similar principle applies to abusive and excessive drinking,” concluded Colin.

The other day I was thinking about alcohol abuse and alcoholism and I began wondering how much alcohol advertising influences our drinking behavior.
As I began thinking more intensely about this I reflected on the pervasiveness, the acceptability, and the availability of alcohol in our society. For example, I can look outside my office window and see a convenient store, a restaurant, and two bars, all of which are within 500 feet from where I live.
In a sense, each one of these businesses is an “advertisement” for drinking. Indeed, once an individual goes inside any one of these businesses, he or she can buy just about as much alcohol as he or she wants.
Now consider the alcohol advertisements that are in magazines, in the movies, on TV, on the radio, and on the gigantic billboards that are scattered throughout our highways.
After viewing drinking from this perspective, it becomes clearer why so many alcohol problems such as alcohol abuse, binge drinking, hangovers, alcohol poisoning, and alcoholism occur so frequently in our society.

Recently, Randy has been drinking more than ever. Not only this, but his job performance at work has been deteriorating, he has had more heated arguments than ever with his girlfriend, he recently received his second DUI in the past two months, and he just hasn’t felt like his old, energetic self.
In addition, Randy has become concerned about having to drink more and more to get the same “buzz.” In fact, he often drinks so much to experience an alcohol “high” that he gets inebriated several times every week. Ironically, he has always been a health-conscious individual who watched his diet and exercised on a daily basis.
Now, however, he has not only lost all interest in keeping physically fit but he has begun to eat nothing but fast food and junk food. Acutely aware of all of these issues, he has begun to wonder if his alcohol-related problems are alcoholism signs.
Stated another way, he has started to wonder if he might be alcohol dependent. The good news, however, is that he has been so concerned about his drinking behavior that he decided to schedule an appointment with his doctor to discuss his excessive drinking.

Sharon was a problem drinker who had just received her third “driving under the influence” arrest. When Sharon went before the court, the Judge told her that her drinking behavior was unpardonable and as a consequence, he was going to sentence her to serve four months in jail.
While in jail, Sharon would be required to get alcohol treatment and learn more about alcohol abuse and alcoholism, binge drinking, and the adverse outcomes of abusive and excessive drinking.
The judge highlighted the fact that unless Sharon gets professional alcohol rehab and learns how to live in an alcohol-free manner, she would be spending a considerable amount of time in jail. Sharon seemed to understand but told the judge that she still believed that jail was not the proper punishment. The judge disagreed, saying that it was his responsibility to keep drinkers who receive multiple DUIs off the roads.

Sandra was a senior at a small rural liberal arts college located in the Southern part of the U.S. After she realized that she had been feeling rundown for the past two weeks, she decided to go to the student health center to see what could be done about her low energy level.
While waiting to talk to the nurse, she noticed a display across from where she was sitting. The title of the display was as follows: “What is Your Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Information IQ?” This title was so interesting that Sandra walked over and began taking an “alcohol information test.”
Out of 40 questions, Sandra answered 18 questions correctly. It only stands to reason that she was would be interested in knowing the questions she missed, so she kept on reading so she could discover the correct answers. Soon after taking the test, she was seen by the nurse.
When Sandra went into the nurse’s office she stated that she thought she knew more about alcohol abuse and alcoholism than her test results demonstrated. The nurse laughed and mentioned that most students who take the test virtually say the same thing. Question. Is it possible that a reduced alcohol information IQ might adversely influence the drinking behavior of college students?

Maybe the best illustration of alcoholism signs concerns the alcohol withdrawal symptoms that are experienced when an alcohol dependent person quits drinking. Clearly there are many other signs pointing to the fact that an individual may be addicted to alcohol. Experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms, however, is the most obvious alcoholism sign because these symptoms reveal that the individual is truly alcohol dependent.
Stated differently, research demonstrates the fact that it is the fear of undergoing alcohol withdrawal symptoms that makes alcohol addicted individuals drink every day. Not only this but it is the fear of suffering through alcohol withdrawal symptoms that goes a long way in explaining why an alcoholic exhibits a loss of control concerning his or her drinking behavior.

Sharon has been an abusive drinker for more than fifteen years. For the first time since she began drinking, however, she has starting to observe different things in her life that have been adversely affected by her drinking behavior.
For example, many times at work, her mind drifts away from what she is doing and she finds herself craving a drink. What is more, she can tell that her work performance hasn’t been up to her usual high standards. As another illustration, she frequently finds herself thinking about going to happy hour and to the local bar to drink with her buddies. Not only this but she has started to observe that she isn’t as healthy as she once was. Finally, she recently received her second DUI in the past two years.
In her heart of hearts she knows that she has a drinking problem but her basic concern these days is whether all of the alcohol-related problems she has been displaying are signs of alcoholism or merely symptoms of alcohol abuse. To quiet her doubts, she scheduled an appointment with her healthcare provider to discuss her drinking behavior and her alcohol-related issues.

Nate was getting more concerned everyday about his Dad’s drinking behavior. For several months he suspected that his Dad was an alcoholic but like the other family members, no one really wanted to come out in the open and frankly discuss the issue.
What triggered Nate’s recent concerns about his father’s drinking was a special TV program that focused on alcohol dependency in general and on the various alcoholism stages in particular. As Nate watched the program, he not only realized that his Dad was probably an alcoholic but that his disease had progressed to one of the later stages of alcoholism.
After watching the program, Nate’s hope was that he could convince his Dad to get the professional alcohol treatment he required.

The alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature demonstrates the fact that social, personal, and legal issues and problems that would motivate any reasonable individual with common sense to conclude that his or her drinking behavior should be significantly reduced or eliminated, apparently do not have much effect on those who are chronic alcohol abusers or alcohol addicted individuals.
