Alcoholism to sobriety, then later social drinking?

I understand that alcoholism is a disease/condition and that it’s defined as a person who has no control over their drinking, usually combined with depression and that abstinence is the only “cure” (for lack of a better term).

Not in a healthy way, you can turn a cucumber into a pickle but never a pickle into a cucumber. In other words; It may be possible for a true alcoholic to occasionally have a drink without great turmoil and strife, but the nagging from within will say “well, I got away with one. Suppose I have two”….Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, relapsing allergy of the body as well as an obsession of the mind. Probably the Person whom we discuss will go almost directly into a clinical depression and then years of therapy and medication will be for naught. Once a person with a diagnosis of mental illness combined with alcoholism their odds of relapse escalates 2.5-14% over a more common Single diagnosis alcoholic, which by the way has an 85% failure rate the first time abstinence is attempted.
And I don’t intend to be correcting recovery terminology but just to keep the slate clear, there is no cure for either. Abstinence is the best treatment medicine. One sure fire technique to keep an alcoholic non-intoxicated with alcohol is not to drink any! all else is b36

I think the main reason for the difference is that non-addicts can’t relate to addicts. Non-addicts are able to stop at one or two drinks, so they assume that addicts lack willpower, i.e they are weak. As far as depression, some people who don’t suffer from mental illness think that people who are depressed should just snap out of it. Depression is not as “tangible” a disease as most physical malodies. Diseases like cancer are thought to be able to strike anyone, so even those who don’t have cancer tend to empathize with those who do. The exception to this might be someone who develops lung cancer after many years of smoking. Some people may look at the cancer as self-inflicted, and thus won’t have much sympathy for them.

I have lived with IBS for 20+ years, and I would venture to guess that you had the IBS all along, and the medications and alcohol just continuously triggered it.

Yes! Thank you! I think that it’s that, and an easy, very simple answer to all the questions of life and death (that, guess what, just happens to love everyone and everything totally!). The fact that they make up their own rules a lot of the time even further supports my claim (examples: they pretend that “Thou shall not kill” doesn’t count when people oppose their God, etc.) that this is just a happy place for them to rest on. “Hmm, I’m kind of feeling sad, because I don’t think I have a place in the universal plan. But wait! There’s God, who loves me, and must have a place for me! But what about death? Oh no, that’s worked out, we’ll all go to a fantasy land if we do everything “God” says!” It’s not only a happy place, it’s a reassurance. I started dating my boyfriend in August of last year. A few weeks later we were having a casual conversation and I told him about my cousin and how his life had changed for the worst when he was doing drugs and how addiction runs in my family. My dad and a great-uncle died from alcoholism, and I witnessed another uncle go through it, so I don’t want to be around someone who does drugs or drinks excessively. He confessed to me a few days later that he was currently doing drugs, marijuana, and had experimented with cocaine, crack, and alcohol. He pledged to give it up and I believe he did.

That is a really tough decision there.

Does anyone know about The recovery place addiction treatment center in fort lauderdale florida?

My sister has been in recovery there for seven months for alcoholism. My family have been paying for it. My sister doesn’t seem better since going there. I feel they are keeping her there cause she is self pay . They have also put her on three different anti depressants and she seems very different. Since being there shew has very little contact with our family and her counselors do not talk to my parents about her recovery. They say she is an adult and they do not disclose information about her .They say some people take longer to recover. My family all live in Ohio and we feel very isolated from my sister. My family are very concerned for my sister and wonder if she should go to a different treatment center.

therecoveryplace.net is their website. they seem to have a christian philosophy blended with 12 step recovery. check out the site, especially the apartments that long term residents get to stay in-i think i would want to stay there rather than ohio.

recovery is big business & many addicts need to be away from family, friends, and their old stomping grounds because all of these things can be triggers to use again. one thing that bothers me about their website is that they allude to separate phases of treatment but do not tell what they are.
another thing that bothers me is the fact that they rely on published christian works that i am not familiar with,
(Stephen Arterburn and New Life Ministries Transformation and The Life Recovery Bible).

while you have reason to be concerned, i would suggest leaving the issue of whether your sister is in the right place to your sister’s best judgement.

If one blacks out more than half the time while drinking mostly hard liquor, is this the sign of alcoholism or some kind of alcohol problem? When this person is under the age of 21, is this cause for concern? Said person claims that this is not “just them” but is a pattern other college student friends; ie. drinking to the point of black out.

Blacking out mainly comes from drinking too much in a short amount of time. Actually, the part of the brain that does the remembering is working part time or not at all. It’s not just hard liquor. Beer can do it also if you consume the same amount of alcohol ( most beer is 5% alcohol whereas hard liquor mostly range from 40%-47%). This doesn’t make you an alcoholic, it makes you an alcohol abuser. If you keep it up, you just might end up doing something that you will regret later.

Yes, definatelty. It will be quite difficult, but so far you seem to be doing a good job. It’s all about willpower, if you really want to you should be able to. But, most likely, you will need some support — especially if you own a bar. You should ask your friends to quit drinking with you for a few days each just so you have some one to be sober with. But hey, if you find it difficult to quit without help there is absolutely NO shame in getting a little bit of help on the side.
