Is this a good layout for an essay?
I have to do a definition essay on addiction. I was going to put it into three parts: alcohol, drugs, and cigarette smoking
Yes—make sure to include each one of those “addictions” in your thesis statement in your intro paragraph.

Finally wrap it up in your conclusion paragraph by restating your thesis statement.

What are the chances of an alcoholic staying sober without support through groups or therapy?
My husband had drug problems in the past which he went to rehab for and has been clean for 9 years. However, he’s still a heavy drinker. I’ve recently moved out and told him I’d come back if he gets sober and the help he needs. He claims to have stopped drinking, but I have no way of knowing for sure. He’s says he’s been through the rehab thing and knows what they will say and suggest and he’ll do that without them. I disagree, but I’ve never had a substance abuse problem. Is sobriety without help going to last or is the possibility of him returning to the drinking a sure thing? I was hoping to move back in before Christmas, but I’m afraid the drinking isn’t over for good. Any insight or advice? We have a 5 and 3 year old and I’m pregnant…that’s why I had to leave.
The Harvard Medical School says that the vast majority of the people who successfully quit drinking for a year or more — eighty percent of them — do it alone, all by themselves, without any treatment program or “support group”.
http://www.orange-papers.org/orange-effectiveness.html#Harvard_Mental
“There is a high rate of recovery among alcoholics and addicts, treated and untreated. According to one estimate, heroin addicts break the habit in an average of 11 years. Another estimate is that at least 50% of alcoholics eventually free themselves although only 10% are ever treated. One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as “Things were building up” or “I was sick and tired of it.” Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution.”

Some Problems Involved In Teenage And Senior Alcohol Abuse Treatment In Massachusetts
Alcohol abuse in Massachusetts among its teenagers and its senior population are two diametrically opposite issues. There are various reasons that complicate both teenage alcohol abuse and senior alcohol abuse. Here we look into some points that cause problems in the alcohol abuse treatment in Massachusetts for these two age groups.
Teenage Alcohol Abuse in Massachusetts
The most significant roadblock on the way to acquiring teen alcohol abuse in Massachusetts is the overall ignorance of the target population. It has been found out that most of the people who are into juvenile alcohol habits in Massachusetts do not even know what they are in. Most of these people might have taken up the habit just because of the curiosity of it or because of peer pressure, but without understanding what its repercussions would be. It becomes very important to work out this ignorance in the minds of the people first. This is one of the reasons why counseling is such an important part of the teen alcohol abuse treatment in Massachusetts.
Then there is the problem of the way in which these people will react to the addiction. Being young, their bodies won’t be quite built to face the strong addictions that they are taking in. Ironically, their central nervous system will accept the addictive substance very easily but the body will not be able to bear the substance. This kind of dichotomy causes an intense condition within the person’s constitution.
At the same time, because the substance has become so well-accepted by the central nervous system, the temptations for more of it will be quite strong. This will make it all the more difficult to work out the addiction from the person’s system. Even the detox treatment will be difficult to carry out, because the typical medicines that are provided during a normal detox program will not be permissible for the young patients, considering their frail physiques.
Hence, the doctors face the very challenging problem of treating a strongly placed addiction using mild medicines. This is what greatly impedes alcohol abuse treatment in Massachusetts for the youngsters.
Senior Alcohol Abuse in Massachusetts
In the case of senior alcohol abuse, the biggest problem is of long term dependency. Most of the seniors who are into alcohol abuse today will have probably started out with their dependencies several years ago. It is quite natural that their bodies must have become completely immunized to the substance by now and that would make it extremely difficult to work out the substance from their physical system.
The detox is very difficult because of this reason. The patient will have built up a very intense accumulation of toxic substances within his or her body over the years and that is what will make it all the more difficult to make the person abstain and go through the entire detoxification process. The patient will definitely face a very strong withdrawal reaction. Detoxification for elderly persons always takes more time than that for youngsters, because the withdrawal effects are always experienced for a very long time and it becomes a very challenging task to work it out.
There is also the problem of a supplementary condition when alcohol abuse in seniors is involved. In most cases, after the body becomes immune to the euphoria that alcohol creates, the patient wants to try out stronger kinds of addictions. Prescription drug abuse is something that is very commonly found among patients undergoing alcohol abuse treatment in Massachusetts. It becomes a challenge to work at these two addictions at once.
Similarly, there could be some health complications or a mental condition that might make the alcohol treatment difficult for the seniors. This calls for dual diagnosis treatment. In such treatments, the patient is first led through a detox program, which lasts longer than a normal detox program because of the very strong withdrawal that people with dual conditions are wont to experience. If the patient has a mental condition that comes in the way of the detox treatment, then it will become a very complicated matter because a weak mental situation will not be able to make them effectively abstain from the substance or to go through the withdrawal conditions.
After this, the patients are led through an aftercare program and if there are mental issues making the treatment complicated, then they are provided with psychiatric counseling also. However, it is always difficult to provide aftercare to senior persons who are undergoing alcohol abuse treatment in Massachusetts because of the preconceived beliefs and their rigid mindsets which makes it very difficult for them to look at things with another perspective.

What is the argument in the paragraph if one is found what is the premises and conclusion.. Need ASAP?
Alcoholism should not be judged as a problem of willpower, misconduct, or any other unscientific diagnosis. The problem must be accepted for what it is—a biopsychosocial disease with a strong genetic influence, obvious signs and symptoms, a natural progression and a fatal outcome if not treated. Since 1988, the medical profession’s and the public’s acceptance of smoking as an addictive disease has resulted in reducing nicotine use in the United States. I feel that similar strides can be made with alcohol abuse. We must begin, as we did with nicotine, by educating and convincing our own colleagues that alcoholism is a disease. We must also emphasize that physicians have played a significant role in reducing the mortality and morbidity from nicotine use through patient education. Through strong physician intervention, I believe that we can achieve similar results with alcohol abuse.
Argument is always topic sentence – Alcoholism should not be judged as a problem of willpower, misconduct, or any other unscientific diagnosis.
Premise(I think) – a biopsychosocial disease with a strong genetic influence, obvious signs and symptoms, a natural progression and a fatal outcome if not treated.

Factors That Influence Alcohol Detoxification In Kansas
The manner of implementation of the alcohol detoxification in Kansas varies from one treatment center to another. In fact, it is right to say that any two persons who are checking in for alcohol detoxification in the same center too will find that the programs used for them have differences. For the most part, alcohol detoxification in Kansas is a highly personalized program. There are factors such as governmental policies, the policies of the treatment center, etc. that influence the program, but there is a huge contribution of the patient’s condition, requirement, preference and even financial situation too. Here we see what different things a program on alcohol detoxification in Kansas will depend on.
Condition of the Patient’s Addiction
This is by far the most influential factor. People who are with their addictions since a long time will have to be provided with a very intense program for alcohol detoxification. This will include administering high dosages of the medications that are typically used in alcohol detoxification in Kansas (Antabuse, Campral, Naltrexone, Topamax, etc.) and monitoring their condition more precisely. If a person has been with an addiction since a long time and if the person has been consuming a lot of the substance, it is definite that their withdrawal will be very intense. It is important to give them a lot of care so that they are out of their condition as effectively as possible.
Age of the Patient
Let us consider two extremes to understand this. Alcohol detoxification in Kansas that is provided to the youth is quite different from that for the seniors. When the patient is young, the detoxification is less medical in nature. The reason for this lies in the fact that the person will not have much presence of alcohol in the body, considering their age. However, it is possible that they might have strong cravings for the substance, because their tender minds will house the temptation for the substance more permanently.
On the distaff side, alcohol detoxification in Kansas that is targeted at the elderly population is highly medical in nature. Most of these people will have decades of alcohol abuse behind them. There are possibilities of them having some physical or psychiatric complications that might come in the way of their treatment. They might be taking some prescription drugs that might interact with the detox medication. Most importantly, they might have some preconceived thoughts about the treatment, which might make the whole thing quite difficult. The treatment providers need to be aware of such problems and dispense the program accordingly.
The age of the patient influences alcohol detoxification in Kansas to a great extent. In fact, you will find alcohol detox centers that cater to specific age groups within the state.
Health and Mental Complications
If the patient has some health complications, then it becomes very difficult to provide an alcohol detox treatment to them in the usual way. Problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, etc. are considered to be chronic problems. The medications that are used for these ailments might interfere with the medications used for the detox. It is due to all these reasons that a different program needs to be implemented for them. The dual diagnosis is one such method. In this kind of treatment approach, patients are treated for coexisting conditions simultaneously. This becomes important if the conditions are such that the treatment of one of them is influenced by the presence of the other.
People with mental complications also fit in this category, i.e. candidature for a dual diagnosis treatment. Mental stability is considered to be a very important factor in alcohol detoxification in Kansas because a person who is not able to keep the mind stable will find it very difficult to pass through the difficult withdrawal symptoms that the abstinence can bring on. The dual diagnosis method contains psychiatric counseling and care which will help the patient seek respite for their mental problems which can help them largely in getting along with the detox treatment.
Financial Condition
There is a lot of variety in the programs for alcohol detoxification in Kansas when it comes to the costs of the treatment. There are state run centers that provide detoxification at low costs (mostly because they are government subsidized) and then there are centers that have this treatment at four times the costs (these are the private centers). It will mostly depend on the financial condition of the patient whether they will like to go for a state run center or a private center, which in turn will influence the kind of detoxification treatment they will get.

What happens to your body when you quit drinking alcohol???
My step-mom is an alcoholic. She quit cold turkey 4 days ago. She was drinking Vodka heavily every day. She hasnt had very many withdrawl symptoms other than being irritable. But- since she stopped, she feels like she has a bladder or kidney infection. Is this common? and is this just “part of it”?
Shes been drinking for years–maybe its just because all the alcohol is coming out of her body?
i know most of the basic symptoms of alcohol withdrawl…im curious if this is another less common symptom??
could just be that she has a bladder infection and wasn’t aware of it because of being intoxicated

Why is the alcohol rehab program called Alcoholics ANONYMOUS?
Why is it called anonymous? and not something like Alcoholics no-more or rehab or whatever?
Part of the way AA works is that no member discusses what any other member has said. They may reveal things which are deeply personal, and of course nobody wants that blabbed all over. They use only first names as one means of adding anonymity to the process of helping one another stay sober.

How Can I Encourage a Teen To Stop Drinking Alcohol?=( I really need your help!=(?
I don’t know what else to do. I love him and he’s stubborn. He doesn’t want to stop. I went over a lot of things like all the effects. Why won’t he stop? He’s only 15 and he’s done it all….sex, drugs, alcohol..but I don’t think he smokes…. I want to help him and I don’t live close to him. He’s really nice but stupid because of this. Also can you help me out with some motivational sayings and pictures…maybe that will help?=(
I’m only a teen myself=(
Well, know that you can never fully change him. Especially if he’s stubborn and you’ve tried everything possible. Try constantly reminding him that it ruins his life and he will later regret it. Ask him why he does it and listen carefully to his answer. Try talking to a counselor or adult you trust. Remember again that you can’t change his mind for him, or at least not as quick as a snap. But talking to an adult would definitely be something you might want to do if this problem continues over time.

Alcohol: If you black out a lot while drinking hard liq is this a problem?
If one blacks out more than half the time while drinking mostly hard liquor, is this the sign of alcoholism or some kind of alcohol problem? When this person is under the age of 21, is this cause for concern? Said person claims that this is not “just them” but is a pattern other college student friends; ie. drinking to the point of black out.
Agree, disagree?
Blacking out mainly comes from drinking too much in a short amount of time. Actually, the part of the brain that does the remembering is working part time or not at all. It’s not just hard liquor. Beer can do it also if you consume the same amount of alcohol ( most beer is 5% alcohol whereas hard liquor mostly range from 40%-47%). This doesn’t make you an alcoholic, it makes you an alcohol abuser. If you keep it up, you just might end up doing something that you will regret later.

How do you handle a problem family member on prescribed narcotics and alcoholism.?
I am ready to leave home, still complains that he is in much pain and I fear if he takes much more he will kill himself soon?
At some point, things like this play out, one way or the other. You have to find that thin line between supporting and enabling.
We hear about hard love but when it comes time to display some, it’s use can become cloudy. We see the person is in pain already. If I am too tuff and he comits suicide, I could not live with myself…
It’s impossible to know the right, the most effective road to take. After all you’re not Dr. Phil… or are you?
As a girl, did you ever have an imaginary friend. Another little girl that always supported you. A trusted friend that complemented your own abilities. That alway knew the right thing to say to maske you feel better about yourself and the world around you…
Well, Maybe it’s time to play a little game of pretend and let your imaginary friend handle this. After all, she isn’t as wrapped up as you are in this. She can see things objectfully and take actions that seem beyond you. Do you think that, as rediculous as it seems, you could step aside and let an expert step in. If you think it’s worth a try, I would make this suggestion.
Take a day or two, get on the internet and look up everything you can find that speaks to this problem. AA has a site as well as hundreds of other well rounded organizations. Find something that speaks directly to your situation and learn all you can about it. When you feel you have found the answer, step aside and let your friend do the deed. She won’t let you down. She won’t let him down either.

What do you think of today’s drinking culture?
There are always new reports coming out about the UK’s problem with binge drinking. Can you see a way out of this problem? Do you think by increasing the tax on alcohol that this could be the way forward to tackling the abuse of alcoholism or do you think there is a better way? I had another question about alcohol earlier which did not go down to well with many people, I still stand firm with what I said in that question but maybe other people will have a better solution to this already pandemic problem.

Glen Beck admits to being an alcoholic but why doesn’t he talk about his drug addiction is he still using?
Glen Beck does admit to being a drug addict, addicted to Pot. He just doesn’t talk about that part of his life any more. In 2000 when he denounced Christians and the Catholic Church he spoke about it often. He has writing about it in his books. What he wasn’t so forth coming about is his addiction to crack, crystal meth and coke.
In 2000 he blamed his hatred of black people for his addictions saying if it wasn’t for black people he wouldn’t have been able to buy drugs. I wonder if anyone informed him blacks don’t grow, manufacture, then emport drugs into the country.
