Alcohol Abuse Symptoms

Alcohol Abuse Symptoms. If you display alcohol abuse symptoms you need to either stop drinking, learn to drink in moderation, or get alcohol treatment.

Can I treat Adrenal Fatigue but still be a caffeine addict?

After a few years of foolish habits (drug abuse, then alcohol addiction–now sober from booze 6 months; drugs stopped 2 years ago) it seems my ongoing health problem is related to Adrenal Fatigue. It is likely that all the drugs (it was REALLY bad for a while) exhausted my adrenal gland, and now I’m left with this god-awful condition.

I am faced with Chronic Fatigue symptoms, brain fog, mental confusion, slight weakness, lack of motivation, etc. Exercise helps but does NOT cure these problems.

I’m too lazy to adjust my diet (an average diet, a decent balance of grains, vegetables, and proteins) if it needs fixing. But I am also VERY, VERY unwilling to break my addiction to caffeine. Without caffeine I am left in a constantly underaroused state due to preexisting factors–severe ADD. Everything is boring. I need my “daily fix” of stimulation or I’m just slow and dreamy, and I can’t focus.

Is there ANY way to treat Adrenal Fatigue without giving up my caffeine addiction?

Zing from HCBL in Florida,it’s a supplement with gingko, gotu cola, bee pollen and ginseng. It’s really good when you are groggy or down.

Plus a regular vitamin like one a day,not a mega dose or stress dose except b-6 is good for nerves up to 50 mgs.

Alcohol Intervention

Alcohol Intervention.  The goal of an alcohol intervention is to confront the problem drinker about his or her drinking behavior and to encourage him or her to get alcohol treatment as soon as possible.

More information regarding alcohol intervention?

I have a sister who is an alcoholic and I want to know how intervention is going to help. I’ve been thinking of doing this for her.

The main aim of an alcohol intervention is to help the alcohol dependent to realize what he is doing and help him recover from his addiction. This is done so that the patient will learn to accept treatment. This process can be done by a few close family members or friends, but there are times wherein the loved ones of the patient will choose to have an intervention specialist facilitate the intervention.

I think it’s a good idea to do this for your sister. It will most probably help her take the first step towards recovery.

alcohol recovery

Alcohol Recovery.  It is only after the problem drinker quits drinking on his own or via alcohol treatment that he or she can achieve alcohol recovery.

How will I get to find alcohol rehabilitation centers in Topsham, Maine?

I need to do this for my mother-in-law. My husband is away on business, and he doesn’t know about his mom being an alcoholic yet. I want to make sure that when he gets here, his mom is already on the way to recovery. That way, he doesn’t have to worry as much. My mom-in-law already wants to get treated and she came to me for help. I don’t know how to find alcohol rehabs, though.

Actually, finding alcohol rehabs is pretty easy. The links below should be able to help you. I’m glad you’re helping your mother-in-law. It must be tough for you that your husband’s away, but I’m sure you can do it. You can also take her to a doctor, and the doctor should be able to give you recommendations regarding rehabs. Good luck! I sure hope she gets well soon!

Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

alcohol problems

Drugs and Alcohol Abuse. People who take drugs and engage in alcohol abuse usually need professional treatment for their drug and alcohol problems.

Recent deaths of Hollywood stars Brad Renfro and Heath Ledger have many people wondering why these talented actors or those around them fail to get help. The VH1 smash reality show, Celebrity Rehab clearly shows the struggles stars face when they attempt to enter a rehab program. Like it or not, the world has watched Britney Spears throw away a stellar career and two beautiful children to her addictions. Continually, she tries to solve problems without the support she truly needs. What people fail to realize is that drug addiction or alcoholism cannot be permanently cured or removed and there are at least seventeen triggers that can lead to relapses.

The most important key to avoiding a setback is to get away and stay away from old friends that drank or got high with you. If you find yourself in an environment where your former vices are being passed around, leave immediately and never return. Another on this list involves cutting ties with a spouse or significant other who drinks or uses drugs. It is painful but important.

A third danger involves skipping meetings with your sponsor. Support groups are essential if you wish to succeed. Cravings are going to rear their ugly head. If you have skipped numerous meetings or blown your sponsor off, you will not feel you have the right to call on them when you most need support. Along this line comes another potential trigger. If you find yourself thinking about your drug use, it is time to seek help.

It is critical to keep all appointments with your doctor. Coming out of a drug or alcohol addiction is potentially life threatening. Your body can go into shock. Remember that addiction is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome. In fact, the sixth trigger to watch for is thoughts that you are strong enough to kick the habit without any help. Strength is a great quality, but no one has the power to kick a drug or alcohol addiction alone.

As soon as you enter into a recovery program for drug or alcohol addiction, have a friend or family member go through your house with you. Throw out any alcohol, narcotics, and/or drug supplies. You will know where your hidden locations are, so be honest when pointing them out.

Creating a daily routine can help keep the troubles to a minimum. As you progress through a rehab program, you can start to alter your routine slightly, but you still need to make sure your day follows a certain pattern so that your mind does not have time to wander.

Please remember that breaking a drug or alcohol habit is going to have ups and downs. Do not allow yourself to dwell on the bad spots. Depression, anxiety, and rage are common side effects as you break your drug or alcohol habit. Your doctor will be able to help you manage them before you cause harm to yourself or others. Another potential trigger occurs when depression or anxiety does act up and you switch your addiction from one drug to another. If you quit one addiction, it is crucial that you not start up another.

If you have been hurt or disappointed, one of the basic twelve-steps in an AA program is to forgive or be forgiven. Often addictions are tied to situations from the past. It’s important to move past the bitterness or regret and start anew.

Number 14 on the potential trigger list deals with facing a life change. If you are working on breaking a habit and then add another issue like getting married or losing your child to your spouse (aka Britney Spears), the odds are slim that your recovery process will be successful. In fact, it is important to focus on getting better first and then work on other problems one at a time.

As you continue the path to kicking drugs and/or alcohol, you must learn to identify your most common causes and warning signs that precede a craving or rough spot. By identifying them early, you will be able to seek support much earlier. And this leads into the 15th trigger–know your limitations and when you need to seek help from your doctor, sponsor or support group.

Allowing troubles to go unchanged will only lead to more cravings – number16 on the list. Stressful, anxious thought patterns or feelings are common reasons people list as to why they drink or use narcotics. If you let personal issues fester, you are far more likely to return to your bad habits.

Finally, never stop using medications your doctor has prescribed. Some prescriptions are there to help you get past the dangerous side effects of withdrawal-pain, nausea, etc. Kicking your addiction is not pretty. Some even die during the process from withdrawal. The prescriptions are there to save your life! Even if you are feeling better, you need to keep taking them until your doctor says otherwise.

Alcohol Treatment Centers

alcoholism

Alcohol Treatment Centers. Many people who drink abusively and who are alcohol dependent get the treatment they need at one of the local alcohol treatment centers.

I’ve always only heard of AA for alcoholism, but recently heard about the hollostic treatment, what is this?

I’m not sure if I spelled hollostic right, but have you heard of this? Are there other methods to deal with alcoholism besides these two? Thanks for your help!

The reason you only hear about AA is that 95% of the treatment centers in the US are 12-step based–despite the fact that studies have shown that AA’s success rate is about the same as it is for people who simply quit on their own (5%–I don’t know where that other person got the idea that AA has a 40-50% success rate).

There are a number of other treatment options and recovery support groups out there, everything from the “long talk with your doctor” method to online support groups such as Smart Recovery. Such groups are not holistic as much as they are secular (AA’s basic premise is that God, or a higher power, gets you sober).

Avoid Narcanon at all costs. Narcanon is very thinly veiled Scientology.

Alcoholic

alcoholics

Alcoholic. When a person becomes alcohol dependent, he or she is known as an alcoholic. Alcoholics usually need professional alcohol treatment for alcohol recovery.

How do alcoholics not get hangovers?

I was just reading a question in another forum. This woman said she drank every single day to the point of passing out drunk. Now, personally, if I get sloshed I will definitely be feeling it the next day. The last thing I would want to do is drink again. I have watched enough “Intervention” to know that hard-core alcoholics never seem to get a hangover. I’m just a little confused as to why.

This is a great question with a lot of potential answers! The obvious answer is, some people like to exagerate their personal situation, and “every single day” may mean Friday,Saturday, and Sunday, while “to the point of passing out drunk” may mean she has low tolerance.

Tolerance! A good topic, and basically means how much you can drink before getting drunk. Our bodies are all different, but a single defining fact is we all are a victim of our own body weights when it comes to metabolizing alcohol. I am a heavier male, and it takes quite a bit more for me to get drunk than a person half my size. because of this, The added quantity of alcohol still affects my liver and kidneys, and makes me sick as it goes through. just as sick as a person half my weight that would drink as much. It all has to come out in the end.

Different alcohols also affect the body differently. Once again we are all different, and some people can tolerate different beverages better than others. One person may respond well to beer but poorly to distilled beverages, while another may be able to drink a fifth of bacardi 151 in a night and wake up peachy keen. Part may be heredity, and part may also be the act(art) of building up one’s tolerance through regimented drinking.

Hair of the Dog! No, its not a nazareth song (Heir of the dog in intended lyrical meaning despite the spelling). This just means there is an old techinique a LOT swear by that is called “hair of the dog that bit you”. meanign, you drink one of whatever you were drinking last night, but in the morning after. This basically means you drinking, roll back asleep, and when you wake AGAIN you feel better. this does not, of course, negate the crappy feeling you experience during your first waking. So I never did this, and I don’t propose you do it. Coffee has more chance of helping than this, unless there is some secret conditioning technique that makes this a clinically proven technique. Is it clinically proven? Nope!

Here’s a snip from cnn.com

“The only proven cure is to avoid “the hair of the dog” that bit you.” Article in sources.

There are also elements of our diet that reduce/eliminate hangover effects. One person may eat something greasy before drinking large quantities to delay/eliminate the onset of inebriation. I’ve heard of one guy eating an entire stick of butter prior to drinking. I personally found tylenol taken halfway into drinking will give me a head start on healing, as I sleep it off. Another possible variable involved in the answer to this question could be pace. Maybe its on how fast you drink. Since it takes time to feel the effects of alcohol, perhaps people who pace it out correctly without rushing have a beter handle on the condition. I remember a pre-christmas gift to myself about 8 years ago was a case of chimey grand reserve. That cost me about 80 dollars, but was an excelent case of abbey beer with elevated alool content. They were in double sized bottles (I think 22-26 oz, somewhere in between). The first bottle went down well, and I waited a bit. the second bottle went down, and I felt the same, buzzy, happy. the third bottle went down, and I looked at the remaining 9 and wondered how many it would take to drown my sorrows. and as I popped the fourth, it hit me. like a freight train, all at once. needless to say, I was extremely sick the next day and a good portion of the next.

So…How fast you drink, What you drink, How long you’ve been drinking, how much you drink regularly, what you take during your drinking sessions, and maybe even the softness/hardness of your bed/place you crashed to sleep it off.

That’s just a quickie diatribe off the top of my mind on the subject, delivered from the mouth of a hardcore drinker who has had his fair share of “jump out of bed, ready to jog a mile” mornings, along with a few sessions of worshiping the porcelin goddess. (although I have to admit it has been at least four years and too many bottles to count since the last time I was actually “sick” from drinking.

alcoholism treatment

Alcohol Treatment Programs. People with drinking problems often need professional help and many times get this help at one of the local alcohol treatment programs.

Are there alcohol rehabilitation programs wherein a family member can get involved?

I was just wondering about this since my mom wants to be able to take part in my dad’s treatment. Are there such treatment programs that will allow her to do this?

Yes, there are. I think some rehabs even encourage this. Studies have shown that patients respond positively to treatment when a non-alcoholic close friend or family member is there to undergo counseling and therapy with them even for just a couple of times. This will not only have a positive effect on the patient, it will also foster a stronger and deeper relationship between them. I think you should ask around for alcohol rehabs with programs like these. It will really benefit your dad, as well as your mom.

Alcohol Related Deaths

alcohol related deaths

Alcohol Related Deaths. People who drink excessively and abusively over a long period of time often experience premature, alcohol related deaths. Why risk your life? Why not get professional alcohol treatment for your drinking problems?

Alcoholism is a serious problem in today’s world. The Institute of Medicine of National academy of science reveals the fact that nearly $40 to $60 billions has been spent every year due to alcoholism related problems. Alcoholism statistics on drunken driving, family, alcoholism in teens, deaths etc are discussed in this article.

Drunken driving statistics provides some painful facts. Though the drunken driving statistics continues to increase every year, many people continue to drive drunk. An average of one in every 30 minutes alcohol related traffic accident is happening in United States. At least 3 out of 10 Americans will be involved in alcohol related traffic accidents at some stage in their life time. The highest rate of drunken driving is associated with young people aged between 21 to 24 years.

Alcoholism statistics exposes the fact that drunken driving cause 10% property damages, 21% non fatal injuries and 46% fatal injuries. Mostly male drivers are involved in accidents due to alcoholism. However the percentage of females involved in drunk driving and causing accidents are also increasing nowadays. Drunk driving is said to be the nation’s frequently committed crime.

The family statistics shows that nearly 76 million people have been addicted to alcoholism in families. Nearly 6.6 million children have at least one alcoholic parent. Nearly half of the Americans reported that they have some close relatives with drug abuse problems. Young people particularly teens have more alcohol problems.

The research shows that nearly 3 million American teens aged between 14 and 17 have the habit of consuming alcohols. It is estimated that the teens aged below 15 years develop the habit of taking alcohols have the risk of becoming addicted to alcohol in future. However the risk is low for youths who do not have the problem of alcoholism before 21 years.

The studies show that 20% of suicide victims are alcoholic. One third of alcoholic deaths are from suicides or accidents only. It is a fact that alcoholic people will get frustrated soon and will attempt to suicide.

Nearly 1, 00,000 deaths in United States are associated with alcohol. One third of alcohol deaths are suicides or accidents like car crashes, drowning, falling etc. In some cases, alcohol causes cancer and heart diseases and thereby leads to death. The study shows that alcohol related deaths are more in youths.

Men have alcohol related problems more than that of women. Nearly 3.9 million women and 9.8 million men are alcoholics. The percentage of men is three times more than that of women. The highest percentage of drinkers in both the sexes is present in youths aged from 18 to 29 years. Nearly half of the Americans reported that they have some close relatives both men and women with alcoholic problems.

In the total population nearly 13.8 million Americans have drinking problems and out of them 8 million are addicted to alcohols. More than 3 million adults aged above 60 have the problem of alcohol consumption. However these problems do have some solution. The only thing need is that the drinkers must be ready to quit the habit of drinking.

Alcoholism Warning Signs

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

young man holding head from alcoholism

Alcoholism Warning Signs. Alcoholics usually display a number of alcoholism warning signs that signal to others that they need professional alcohol treatment.

We’ve all heard the saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is especially true with teen suicide. Once a teen is suicidal the problem is too far in its development. There is a better way to identify and prevent teen suicide. The key here is early diagnosis, before the problem is life threatening.

Screening for depression and other mental illnesses– There are a number of pre-emptive screens available to identify depression in teens. In a recent case study 90 percent of suicidal teens showed characteristics of depression many years before becoming suicidal. Seeking treatment for depression is much easier today as it was in the past. It is also gaining acceptance as a serious mental illness. In addition to depression there are other mental illnesses that have a higher likelyhood of suicide. Work with a qualified therapist or counselor to discuss your child’s risk and mental illness.

Drinking while down. Alcohol is a depressant. It reduces oxygen to the brain and brings the whole body into a relaxed intoxicated state. As a drug alcohols function is to be a downer. When coupled with depression the results can be devastating. Depression and drinking feed off one another and the problems gets worse and worse. Talking openly with your teen about issues and behaviors can give you the information you need to seek help. If you have a suspicion that your teen is drinking while down (depressed) seek help immediately. Youth that participate in this behavior are in a extremely high risk group.

Social Withdrawal. If your teen starts to spend more time alone as opposed to social activities with long time friends it may be a warning sign. Many teens that attempt suicide try to isolate themselves before making that attempt. If your teen starts to break ties and longtime friendships without seeking new ones try talking with them about what is going on in their life. Sometimes there are good reasons for the change and other times there are not. As a parent you can make the call on whether the change is reasonable or not.

Suffering with a major loss. A happy teen can quickly change when catastrophe strikes. Everyone reacts to adversity differently. The death of a loved one who is close to your child, a divorce, and being rejected can all trigger suicide in some people. Talking about suicide and the feelings of everyone involved can provide valuable information to you as a parent. When you talk with your teen try to be reassuring that they can trust you. If they express dark or disturbing thought let them know that you appreciate them sharing these things with you. Grief counseling might be a good idea early on if you know your teen struggles with depression or has exhibited any other warning signs in the past.

Sudden change in behavior. Watch for signs of dramatic change in your child. While this might be a warning sign of imminent suicide it might present itself early enough to provide great help to parents. If your teen is usually a good student and suddenly stops caring about grades this might be a sign. Other warning signs might include a teen changing from being careful to being reckless. Car accidents with kids with perfect driving records and other events might provide clues into their intentions.
If you suspect suicide talk about it. If your teen is not suicidal they will not become suicidal. There is virtually no risk in bringing up the subject if done carefully and with respect.

Alcoholism and Depression

alcoholism and depression

Alcoholism and Depression. A person who is an alcoholic and who is also depressed needs to get professional treatment for both medical conditions.

Alcohol and depression appear to go hand in hand these days. It is usually very hard to differentiate an alcoholic person who is depressed from a depressed person who is alcoholic. However, recent findings have shown that people who are depressed are more likely to take up to drinking than alcoholic people are to be depressed. The reason behind this is that, alcohol offers temporary comfort and a  relaxed state of the mind to a person who is depressed. This helps depressed people cheer themselves up, be able to sleep and even briefly lift up their moods. It is for this reasons that depressed patients always find it easy to generate extended needs for large quantities of alcohol intake.

However, since depression can lead to suicidal thoughts, the lack of self control, impulsivity and compromised judgment initiated by the alcohol levels in the body can lead to the fulfillment of these thoughts by the depressed person. This possibility has greatly contributed to the rising number of both suicide attempts and  complete suicide occurrences that have taken place in the society today. Other common problems of alcohol and depression are often complicated by social problems. These problems may include under performing at work, having frequent marital problems among other things. This may lead to cases of divorce or loss of jobs among the depressed people.

Apart from social problems, alcohol can cause a lot of physical harm to the patient. Such harm includes the complete destruction  of internal organs such as the liver. When alcohol completely affects the liver making it not to function properly, jaundice, a health problem resulting from hepatitis, allows the skin to have a yellow discoloration something that may lead to death if the patient is not quick enough to seek treatment for this terrible condition. Stomach ulcers, cases of anemia, impotence, loss of sensation in the arms or legs and profound memory disturbances are among other physical problems that may be realized when one tries to mix alcohol and depression.

Legal problems are also most likely to catch up with you once you start taking alcohol while under depression. The reason for saying this is that, since alcohol makes one have an impulsive behavior, it is very easy for a depressed person to behave or drive recklessly something that may lead him to land on the wrong side of the law. With this happening, the depression condition may find itself worsening in the process since more trouble will have been added to you.

To deal with this problem, treatment with a selective SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressant is often administered to the patient so as to improve both the alcohol and depression disorders. This antidepressant works by reducing the depression levels of the patient making him not to feel so bad that he turns to alcohol for comfort. Other medication such as Disulfiram and Acamprosate can also be useful for this problem. Disulfiram is used to help the patient to abstain from alcohol since it makes the person get an unpleasant reaction whenever he or she mixes the medicine with alcohol while Acamprosate often helps the patient reduce the urge for taking alcohol. Support and counseling both from family members and professional doctors can be helpful to the patient since it is usually the sense of lack of support that makes the patient resort to alcohol whenever he feels depressed.

Alcoholism Intervention. The purpose of an alcoholism intervention is to get the alcoholic to understand his or her actions and to get professional alcohol treatment.

Do you personally consider Alcoholism a disease?

Do you personally consider Alcoholism a disease, or do you consider it an addiction just like nicotine or other drugs? Both?

How is it a disease? You have control over it. Wouldn’t that be considered an addiction (because you induced it yourself)? Idk, that’s just my opinion.
