What is substance abuse? How would you define this term? While some people chalk it up to simple illegal drug abuse, other people believe that it is not quite that simple.

If you were to ask an average medical doctor what this form of abuse entailed, they would tell you that it had to do with illegal, and frequent, drug use. However, many people argue that this definition is in no way inclusive. For example, there are plenty of people that use various substances that aren’t drugs at all (inhalants and solvents), while others excessive use alcohol and prescription drugs. So, what is substance abuse, really?

Should you decide to drink caffeinated beverages in excessive amounts, will this be considered abuse? There really isn’t any one way to define this sort of addiction, so rather than define it, let’s just talk about it for a moment. How can you tell if you, or someone you love, have become obsessed with a substance? A person that is driven by the constant need and desire to obtain one particular matter is an addict. Do you wake up every day craving one thing? Will you go to any lengths to get that thing? Are you angry and frustrated when you cannot have that thing? If so, you may be in the midst of a nasty addiction.

What can you do about substance abuse? If you believe that your life is helplessly spinning out of control, seek professional help. Talk to your friends, family, doctor, or psychologist in order to find out how to breathe freely once again. If you really want to answer the original question (what is substance abuse?) you will find that this type of abuse is akin to a monster that takes over your life with no concern for your personal well being.

Those that seek help for their addiction will find the path long and hard, though it is necessary. Contrastingly, those that do nothing about their current behavior will simple fall deeper and deeper into the spinning spiral … sometimes, there is no way out. No matter what the cost may be, help yourself (or another person you know) with your addiction.

What is substance abuse? It is a raging river that will not stop gushing until you cannot take it anymore. No matter how it is defined, this type of abuse will not end until you stop it. Remember, any substance can be abused, so think twice before you reach for that one thing that you cannot live without.

Substance abuse (drug abuse) happens when at one certain point in time you take drugs/alcohol, etc.  For example, if you snorted coke once at a party that would be substance abuse.

Substance addiction (drug addiction) and substance dependence (drug dependence) are synonymous, since an addiction is defined as a dependence on a drug.

If you continued to snort cocaine, and couldn’t get by without it because your body got used to the coke being in your body and you experienced withdrawal symptoms when you were without the cocaine, then you would be dependent/addicted.

I don’t think substance abuse treatment centers will allow you to talk to the patients as they are really strict regarding the implementation of their privacy rules. I think you can interview the counselors and therapists, though. You can still get a lot of information that way.

However, at times you may find people at these public centers coldly impersonal since they do not have that sense of dedication or commitment and have to treat a large number of people and are overburdened.

However this is not true in all cases. At some public treatment centers, you will find the workforce who choose to work at a public center for less money over working at a private center as these doctors and therapists and any other worker who works at a public center are not in their specific job for money, they want to help the people who have no other option and don’t have much money, it’s people like that who are genuine and their heart really is in their work. However, generalizing that private centers have staff which is not good or compassionate won’t be right. Public centers may have plain simple accommodation and adequate equipment and staff. Private centers on the other hand are well-equipped, have good living spaces and all the facilities to make your stay pleasant and fruitful.

So in answer you shouldn’t necessarily pay to go to a private center, only after you have looked into it can you decide. You will feel that staff cares so much more at a public center even if the equipment isn’t state of the art it doesn’t mean it is a not worth considering, just remember to choose a center that suits you.

I want to know more about drug and substance abuse in general and the support I should give to someone undergoing the recovery. I am a counselor handling some of this cases.

I have been through this and the one thing that was the most help to me was to join Alanon. Find a local chapter and go to the meetings. It will surely open your eyes and give you ways to cope and help.

Substances that are abused include tobacco, alcohol, addicting medicines and heroin etc. People may start using drugs or indulge in substance abuse for fun, due to peer pressure, curiosity or any other reason, but due to this act, the society has to pay a significant cost. Abused substances are the psychoactive substances that cause dependence syndrome. If a person indulges in substance abuse, he/she feels a strong desire to use it, cannot control its use and cannot get over the addiction even after harmful consequences. Substance abuse can change the perception, judgment, physical control or attention of an individual.

Hi!  I’m trying to figure out if there is a substance abuse problem in my school through a survey, but I can’t think of enough questions (I need about 5 more.)

Our hypothesis: We think there is a substance abuse problem at our school that affects gender differently. We feel that boys are more likely to develop this type of problem because of peer pressure, while girls would be more influenced by emotional factors.

The first issue I have is this: your statement had to be edited so that others would be able to make sense of what you wrote.  Couldn’t you take a few minutes to proofread your material?  Second, why do you need help articulating five more questions?  If you sat down and thought about this topic for even a few minutes, you would have many more than five questions.  Learn to thing on your own before you ask others for help!

Oldest youth inmate soon to be released
Sometime in the next several weeks, Donald Gerald Schmidt, the oldest inmate in the California Youth Authority system, will likely learn when and where he will be released.  I wonder if he will immediately turn to drugs and alcohol.  After all, he was surrounded by a group of inmates, many of whom were losers:  drug or alcohol abusers.   If so, he will clearly need alcohol abuse, drug abuse, or substance abuse treatment.

I have worked in physical rehabilitation areas (neuro, spinal cord injuries, MVAs, etc). It was very rewarding to see people get better. I don’t know if that was the rehab that you were talking about.

You can stop binge drinking by making the necessary improvements in your mind, creating a new model of thought. A list of self-improvement: addictions, personal repair and remodeling are among the most important elements to address when you suffer from an addiction. Decorating your mind with denial is no way to overcome your substance abuse problem.

Models of Thought

Your mind is a vast resource that has much to offer. This resource can also work against you as well, especially when your goals look at a list that begins, self-improvement: addictions. If binge drinking is part of your routine, you can make the necessary changes in your behavior by remodeling your mind.

Denial can be very comfortable when you are dealing with an addiction. Many people fail to see the need to stop binge drinking because this behavior may occur on occasion rather than on a regular basis. This excess consumption of alcohol is problematic because it isn’t taken very seriously if it occurs once-in-awhile.

You have a model of thought that persists in your psyche. This model is reflected in your behaviors. In order to overcome your drinking problem, it is necessary to do a little remodeling in your mind. This approach is best when it occurs in the subconscious mind.

Stop Binge Drinking

When you seek self-improvement: addictions, thoughts, emotions and behaviors are each important aspects of your list. Your success relies in part, on how you work through each realm in the list. The first step is to recognize that you have to stop binge drinking. Recognizing and acknowledging the problem is extremely important.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

The next step involves changing the way your mind and your body interact and communicate. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and hypnotherapy seek to help you create a healthy interaction between your thoughts and your physical being. The target in this approach is your behavior.

What are the chances of an alcoholic staying sober without support through groups or therapy?

My husband had drug problems in the past which he went to rehab for and has been clean for 9 years. However, he’s still a heavy drinker. I’ve recently moved out and told him I’d come back if he gets sober and the help he needs. He claims to have stopped drinking, but I have no way of knowing for sure. He’s says he’s been through the rehab thing and knows what they will say and suggest and he’ll do that without them. I disagree, but I’ve never had a substance abuse problem. Is sobriety without help going to last or is the possibility of him returning to the drinking a sure thing? I was hoping to move back in before Christmas, but I’m afraid the drinking isn’t over for good. Any insight or advice? We have a 5 and 3 year old and I’m pregnant…that’s why I had to leave.

Were My Rights Violated? Professional Advice Needed!

This is a legal question. I am under probation for a DUI offense. My probation officer demands that I go to some sort of “treatment” program. She wants me to go off certain medications that probation feels are “addictive”.  Anyway, the probation officer spoke with my doctor and identified me as a “substance abuse” offender. She had no written authorization to do this”release” and my doctor informed in an email that she had NO knowledge of this info prior. To my understanding this could be a violation of HIPAA laws and protected health information laws. Please professional or knowledgeable answers only. And yes I have a copy of the mail.

Before I respond to your questions, I find it amazing that you want professional or knowledgeable answers and yet everything you wrote had to be edited so that others could make sense of what you were articulating.  Couldn’t you at least take the time to proofread what you had written?  You sound like you are in the third grade.

I find it interesting that you are looking so intently at your rights and yet you violated the rights of others by drinking and driving.  Wake the hell up and look in the mirror.  You are on a “loser” path and need to address your drug and/or alcohol abuse before you become an addict.

No it is not a violation of HIPAA.  Your doctor did not disclose any information and when you committed the DUI you gave up some of your rights.  You need to learn some better coping skills and how to become more responsible in life.

What advice would you give to someone who deals with visual triggers to use alcohol or drugs.  For example, one of my clients lives in an area where when he walks down the street he sees people on patio bars and this triggers him. MOVING IS NOT AN OPTION – this is where the treatment facility is located. Traveling a different route is not an option for the most part. What are some effective coping skills he may utilize?

You are never going to get to a stage where he is completely devoid of visual triggers – unless of course he chooses to move to a Muslim country. He should use hypnotherapy to remove the trigger response and replace it with a reinforcement of his sobriety. Can a Residential Treatment Center Deny Treatment?

I live here in WI, and my child is in need of residential treatment.  She’s currently misdiagnosed with bipolar, and is using substances and is a substance abuse. There is a Residential treatment center (RTC) that will address all of her needs and get her on track to a healthy lifestyle, but they say that they don’t feel their program would benefit my child. This RTC boasts, intense therapy in all aspects of their care, but they have referred me to out of state in Illinois, and MN.

The facility in MN has referred me to South Dakota to send my child. How can I actively participate in my child’s recovery if she is in Illinois or South Dakota?

I have adequate insurance to cover cost of RTC, but seems like the facility don’t want to take a chance on my insurance. Insurance has informed them that there is no limited bed stay, and my only cost is $250 for deductible.

I feel that my child is being discriminated against in some form or or another, and why can’t she be treated in her home state? I’m having a big problem with this.

Yes, a private psychiatric (or medical) facility can deny treatment to patients whose conditions are not immediately life threatening, and refer out. Medicine (at least in the USA) is not socialized (as it is in Canada and the UK, for example), and is a privilege, rather than a “right”.

Your child may or may not benefit from the particular program in question. It sounds like the facility there believes that your child would be better served elsewhere. When facilities refer out – there is an excellent reason.

Keep in mind: your child means $ to a RTC. As ugly as it sounds, that is the bottom line.

Not all RTCs will benefit all children. Hollering “discrimination” when a particular RTC does not meet your needs or when the facility that WILL meet your child’s needs is inconvenient to you is not going to help your child.

“Discrimination” has not occurred just because you do not happen to live near a facility that is equipped to treat your child. Unfortunate? Sure. Discriminatory? Not by a long shot.

If your child needs residential treatment, the likelihood that you’ll find a good one next door is slim. You may need to get used to the fact that this will definitely present an inconvenience and possibly considerable expense to get your child the treatment he/she needs.

I encourage you to do what needs to be done. Get on the phone with the facilities to which you were referred and see what you can do about arranging an intake.

Ask them about ways in which you can still be an active participant in your child’s treatment (e.g., weekly family therapy sessions where you participate via phone). The idea of residential treatment is to REMOVE the child from his/her current environment for an extended period of time. As hard as this may be for you to swallow, YOU are part of the “current environment”. Even if you lived next door to an RTC, you would only be allowed to visit (most likely) for very circumscribed periods of time. In other words, the physical location of your child’s RTC makes little to no difference in the larger scheme of things.

Education Education and more Education!! A child born with genetics prone to addictions there needs to be a lot of open communication throughout the whole family. If you see any signs of weakness or not paying attention to schooling address it openly and see if any one in the family can come up with a good healthy way to overcome any addictions. Talking to professionals may not work alone but attend some self help meetings and you’ll be sure to meet people in the same predicament.
