alcohol addiction treatment 2 Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Alcohol Addiction Treatment. People who are alcoholics need to want to change their lives and get alcohol addiction treatment they need so they can restore their lives.

I have to find an addiction treatment center in Clearlake, California. How will I go about this?

My sister needs my help in finding addiction treatment centers. Her alcohol consumption has really increased lately and she hasn’t been her usual cheerful self. She’s asking for my help in finding a treatment center for her and I really want to do this. I really want to see her be back to normal– be once again the sister I knew. Somehow, sometimes, when I look at her, it seems like she’s a whole new person, and this scares me. I just want her to be sober again. Help.

You should take her to a doctor. The doctor will be able to properly assess her situation and tell you about the treatment programs that will be right for her, as well as tell you which addiction treatment centers have these kinds of programs. You can also check out the links that I have included below. These have lists of the contact information of the addiction treatment centers in Clearlake, California. I really hope that your sister gets treated soon. Just hang in there and keep on giving her your support, ok? Good luck!

Alcohol Education.  Due to the horrific number of people in our society who are alcohol abusers and alcoholics, relevant alcohol education is needed.

What is happening to Britain?

Economy is in shambles
Cost of living is going through the roof, wages not reflecting the increase
Filling the petrol tank up is massive percentage
Not safe to walk the streets
Children turning in to alcohol
Education failing our next generation
Crime and drugs out of control
What can be done? Can we ever be ‘Great Britain’ again?
Who is to blame? Government? Parents? Children?

Alcoholism Warning Signs

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

young man holding head from alcoholism

Alcoholism Warning Signs. Alcoholics usually display a number of alcoholism warning signs that signal to others that they need professional alcohol treatment.

We’ve all heard the saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is especially true with teen suicide. Once a teen is suicidal the problem is too far in its development. There is a better way to identify and prevent teen suicide. The key here is early diagnosis, before the problem is life threatening.

Screening for depression and other mental illnesses– There are a number of pre-emptive screens available to identify depression in teens. In a recent case study 90 percent of suicidal teens showed characteristics of depression many years before becoming suicidal. Seeking treatment for depression is much easier today as it was in the past. It is also gaining acceptance as a serious mental illness. In addition to depression there are other mental illnesses that have a higher likelyhood of suicide. Work with a qualified therapist or counselor to discuss your child’s risk and mental illness.

Drinking while down. Alcohol is a depressant. It reduces oxygen to the brain and brings the whole body into a relaxed intoxicated state. As a drug alcohols function is to be a downer. When coupled with depression the results can be devastating. Depression and drinking feed off one another and the problems gets worse and worse. Talking openly with your teen about issues and behaviors can give you the information you need to seek help. If you have a suspicion that your teen is drinking while down (depressed) seek help immediately. Youth that participate in this behavior are in a extremely high risk group.

Social Withdrawal. If your teen starts to spend more time alone as opposed to social activities with long time friends it may be a warning sign. Many teens that attempt suicide try to isolate themselves before making that attempt. If your teen starts to break ties and longtime friendships without seeking new ones try talking with them about what is going on in their life. Sometimes there are good reasons for the change and other times there are not. As a parent you can make the call on whether the change is reasonable or not.

Suffering with a major loss. A happy teen can quickly change when catastrophe strikes. Everyone reacts to adversity differently. The death of a loved one who is close to your child, a divorce, and being rejected can all trigger suicide in some people. Talking about suicide and the feelings of everyone involved can provide valuable information to you as a parent. When you talk with your teen try to be reassuring that they can trust you. If they express dark or disturbing thought let them know that you appreciate them sharing these things with you. Grief counseling might be a good idea early on if you know your teen struggles with depression or has exhibited any other warning signs in the past.

Sudden change in behavior. Watch for signs of dramatic change in your child. While this might be a warning sign of imminent suicide it might present itself early enough to provide great help to parents. If your teen is usually a good student and suddenly stops caring about grades this might be a sign. Other warning signs might include a teen changing from being careful to being reckless. Car accidents with kids with perfect driving records and other events might provide clues into their intentions.
If you suspect suicide talk about it. If your teen is not suicidal they will not become suicidal. There is virtually no risk in bringing up the subject if done carefully and with respect.

What post rehab alcoholism related recovery activities are covered by health insurance?

For instance, do insurance companies typically cover the cost of traveling to and from AA meetings, the cost of meeting sponsors, etc?

Health insurance will not pay any of these expense or anything similar to them.
They will usually pay for some follow up out patient counseling with you having to cover co-pay amount per visit.
The counseling has to be by a license professional.
if going this route make sure the doctor/counselor you select excepts your plan.

Father Martin Chalk Talks DVD – Spiritual Aspects of Alcoholism

The deepest damage of the disease is to the “inner person”. It is far more devastating than the damage to the body, in most cases. The Big Book calls alcoholism a “soul-sickness”. Through denial and other behavior, the alcoholic lives against his or her conscience. Step Four calls for a moral inventory. The answer then is SPIRITUAL! AA is a set of spiritual principles. The result of living these p…

Alcoholism Rehabilitation

Friday, January 15th, 2010

It sounds ridiculous when a person even without being addicted to alcohol is advised to join an alcohol rehab program. The irony is that it has become highly pertinent today when every clubs, big restaurants and parties are drenched in colourful liquors and the fragrance even creates a churning inside the non-addicts. Prevention is better than cure and you must know how to safeguard yourself from the touch of such dangerous alcohol. An alcohol rehabilitation process teaches you how to exhibit guts to stand out and show resilience to alcohol even in a crowded hall. Most of the are set for the alcohol addicts, but such programs can cast a magical spell among the commoners, who otherwise would never think of alcohol.

Several methods are adopted in the alcohol rehab program to raise the hatred feeling about alcohol. One way may be if you are really drowned in alcohol, then your inquisitiveness evaporates and drinking in huge quantity can generate a hatred feeling by default. It is said that indulgence for some time becomes lucrative and enjoyable, but too much of anything becomes bad. You can be shown plenty of mishaps. You can be shown the lunatic talks coming out of the lips of the drunken groups. You can be even shown the wobbly feeling or even in worst case, falling down of people in the party or club, where over drinking has forced them to loose their normal rhythm. It depends upon the organiser, how they want to take you through the alcohol rehabilitation process, so that you start hating them even before dreaming of the future pegs.

Some of the alcohol rehabilitation processes even ask you to meditate and start generating your own energy from within. If you are allowed to be close to the nature, you get inspired by the glittering Sun, the flow of wind or the green paddy fields, where the creativity becomes highly vibrant.  It is true that the nature is ready to give us a lot of energies, if we know how to extract them. Modern alcohol rehabs clearly emphasize on such natural activities and meditation like self generating processes. The basic fact remains that people become prone to alcohol to earn additional energy or to be in a different mood. If the combination of nature and your own body can generate the same, where lays the problem? After all, the nature and your own body are much safer than dreaded chemicals!

The Happy Alcoholic Still Creates Problems

There is a myth that suggests a person’s excessive drinking is not consequential to him or herself or those around them, if they remain in good mood.

In realty, excessive alcohol consumption can be very harmful to self and others, regardless of one’s mood or attitude towards the drinking.

Categories of alcohol consumption include light, moderate, heavy, abusive, and binge. These categories are differentiated by quantity of standard alcoholic beverages consumed and pattern of consumption. While some persons may believe that beer is less consequential than wine and that both are less consequential than liquor, this is but another myth. A beer yields the same alcohol equivalent as 4 ounces of wine and the same alcohol equivalent as an ounce of liquor. Hence it really doesn’t matter what form the alcohol comes in, just the number of standardized beverages.

By definition for men, approximately 6 standard alcoholic beverages per week is categorized as light drinking, 12-14 as moderate, 24-26 as heavy and 36 or more as abusive. Rates for women are calculated as being about 2/3’s that of men. Furthermore, abusive drinking infers that that level of consumption places the drinker at a high likelihood of contracting an alcohol related physical disorder, such as liver disease, diabetes and Korsakov’s syndrome. It is noteworthy that any level of regular drinking increases the risk of these and other associated diseases, but that the more alcohol consumed on a regular basis, the greater the risk.

Binge drinking is defined as five or more standard alcoholic beverages at least once per month on a monthly or so basis. The risks associated with binge drinking are injury and death, the result of misadventure, accident/poor judgement, loss of consciousness, falls and violence.

In terms of impact on self and others, reaching criteria for any level of drinking increases the risk of academic, vocational, social, familial or marital problems. Further, children of parents who consume alcohol to the point of reaching criteria for any level are at risk of social and school related problems during their childhood as well as social, vocational, marital and parenting problems in their adulthood.

It does not matter if the regular drinker is of good or poor mood, the result of their consumption, only that they reached criteria for being categorized as a regular drinker at any level. Drinking, in and of itself increases risk of poor outcomes for self and others.

Hence, when adult children of alcoholic parents enter counselling for martial, social or vocational problems, they may have a very difficult time understanding the relationship between their parent’s drinking and current issues. Further, parents who bring their children to counselling for social or academic problems may resist and have difficulty believing or accepting that parental alcohol consumption is a contributing factor to their child’s problems.

At the very least, regular alcohol consumption by a parent is time away from relating with the children and provides a role model of acceptability for regular alcohol consumption. This role model is often the jumping off point for the child-come-teen’s alcohol consumption and not a marker of the limit of consumption. Hence teens of parents who consume alcohol on a regular basis are at risk of greater consumption and alcohol related problems. Family members of even the happy alcoholic will worry about their drinking and driving, health problems, finances, vocational stability and relationship issues.

If you are facing difficulties with your child, or you are an adult facing difficulties in your life now, take a look at alcohol consumption patterns in your family. If there is a happy or unhappy alcoholic, chances are that is contributing to the problem and this needs to be explored and addressed.

Medicinal therapies are an important part of alcohol detox in Minnesota. Some people wonder where the medications come in. However, it is important to note that alcohol detoxification is all about bringing a person out of the tendency of using any more of alcohol. This is done by making the person abstain from the substance in an isolated setting and when the withdrawal symptoms occur, those are treated. Such treatment is not possible without using some specific medicinal therapies.

There are various kinds of medications used in alcohol detoxification in Minnesota, each of them providing a specific kind of purpose. Together, they act to bring the person completely out of the tendency to consume alcohol. This is definitely a very difficult thing to achieve, but through the right combinations of medicinal drugs, this becomes achievable. Here we see how the medicinal therapies are used in the alcohol detoxification program in Minnesota.

The main forms of medication used are disulfiram (Antabuse), acamprosate (Campral), naltrexone and topiramate (Topamax). Each of these has a definite role to perform.

Use of Antabuse

Antabuse works for treatment during alcohol detox in Minnesota in a very specific manner. It is responsible for the release of acetaldehyde in the body as soon as it is consumed. Acetaldehyde is one of the substances that are naturally released in the body when the person has a hangover. Hence, this substance is directly related with the hangover the person experiences. Antabuse works in the following way.

When a person is on Antabuse treatment, there is an elevated release of acetaldehyde whenever the person consumes alcohol. Due to this, the person’s hangover is exacerbated, causing definitely inconvenient effects. As a result, the person does not feel like continuing with the alcoholic habit. Slowly, as the hangover gets more and more exacerbated, the person might completely stop using alcohol.

Using Antabuse for an extended period of time can actually make the person come out of the habit of using the substance. As the person finds that it is more difficult to get out of the hangover, there is a definite possibility that the person will develop a dislike for the substance and will stop using it entirely.

Use of Campral

Campral is acamprosate, a chemical that is known to normalize the chemical reactions that take place in the brain when alcohol is consumed. These reactions include the release of dopamine, the substance that creates the false sensation of pleasure when the person consumes alcohol. This is definitely one of the reasons why the person has a strong craving for alcohol. In fact, in some people, the release of the pleasure-inducing dopamine and the intake of alcohol are so closely linked together that they will not be able to feel happy by any other way except through the consumption of alcohol.

However, the use of Campral for a fixed length of time helps them to come out of this condition. Most importantly, it helps the brain of the person to stabilize during the alcohol detoxification during which period the brain undergoes a lot of psychopathological changes. Campral helps the person’s brain to get stabilized so that the detox might get underway.

Use of naltrexone and nalmefene

Both naltrexone and nalmefene are chemicals that are used in a very unconventional method of alcohol detox in Minnesota which is known as the Sinclair method. This program follows a theory of pharmacological extinction which is explained as follows.

When a person consumes alcohol, the body releases certain endorphins. These endorphins are the substances that urge the body to consume more alcohol. They are the memory maps of the body that remember that the person felt happy when he or she consumed alcohol the last time and that now they must repeat the activity.

However, when the person is kept on a treatment of naltrexone or nalmefene, the production of these endorphins is reduced. This is how the patient finds that his or her urge to consume alcohol has become seriously reduced.

Use of Topamax

Topamax, chemically known as topiramate, is a substance that works in a similar fashion to acamprosate. When the substance is consumed, it will reduce the brain’s production of dopamine. The direct effect of this is that the person will not feel any pleasure in the consumption of alcohol. This will make it much easier to bring the patient out of the compulsion of having the substance.

These are the main medications that are used in alcohol detox in Minnesota. The administration of these drugs begins when the patient is still in detox and continues for a long time after that, through the aftercare program.

Detoxification Center

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

There are many different types of programs offered at a drug treatment center. Drug addiction is a treatable disorder and treatment teaches a person how to control their urges and find ways to lead a fulfilled and happy life once again. Addicts receiving treatment are given counseling, therapy and taught to make changes to behavior that will enhance the chances of success.

There are many different types of therapies given to a recovery addict in a drug treatment center. Behavior therapy techniques can include counseling, support groups, individual and family therapy and psychotherapy. The more comprehensive the treatment a recovery patient receives, the more likely that better results will be the outcome. Many patients also require additional medical and health care services while receiving drug treatment. Patients who stay at a drug treatment facility for more than 3 months have a much better success rate than others who stay for a shorter period of time. Addicts who go through a drug detoxification process prior to entering a treatment center will receive additional beneficial treatment at a drug treatment facility.

The ultimate outcome and goal for any drug treatment center program is to teach and enable the patient to achieve lifelong sobriety and abstinence from drug use. The immediate goals are to teach the patient to reduce or discontinue drug use, improve functioning abilities and to minimize the harmful and hazardous medical and social implications of drug addiction. There are several different types of treatment modalities available such as a short-term program which lasts less than 6 months and long-term programs which are for addicts with a more severe addiction.

There are programs that are offered within the therapeutic communities which are highly structured programs require a patient to reside within a center to be treated. Usually, this type of treatment is used for those who have a long history of addiction and dependency, criminal behavior and harbor a serious problem with social functioning. Sober living houses and communities are also beneficial to post-recovery and another important tool to aid a former addict in staying clean and sober.

These are just a few of the many different types of drug treatment programs available for people suffering from drug addiction. There are so many options available and treatment modalities used that any type of addiction can be dealt with safely and effectively. Some forms of treatment work better than others, but as long as the program selected addresses the needs of the individual patient and adapts to their changing needs, the chances for success are bettered substantially.

A drug treatment center is the best place possible for a person who has tried unsuccessfully to deal with an addiction on their own. The staff and rehab professionals are instrumental to the recovery process and now exactly how to help a person on their personal journey to a healthier way of life. Drugs do not have to be a way of life, there is help and hope.

If you or someone you love is dealing with drug addiction and needs help, please contact us today for more information.

Alcohol Withdrawal

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

There are a group of symptoms that may occur when a person suddenly stops drinking alcohol. These symptoms may take place after either chronic or prolonged ingestion of alcohol. While not everyone who stops drinking will experience withdrawal symptoms, most people who have been drinking heavily or for a long period of time will have some form of withdrawal symptoms. It is hard to predict which symptoms an individual will experience.

If you have been drinking for years or if you have been drinking alcohol in large amounts you may want to contact a professional before you stop drinking suddenly. Going cold turkey can be dangerous and may not be successful.

Before you stop drinking there are some symptoms you should be aware of. There are both psychological and physical symptoms and they range from mild to moderate to severe. If you know about the symptoms before you quit you may have a better chance of managing them.

You may have feelings of shakiness, nervousness or jumpiness. Your anxiety level may rise or you may be more irritable than usual. You also may become easily excited and have problems with fatigue or depression.

Other mild to moderate psychological symptoms include difficulty thinking clearly and bad dreams. You may experience emotional mood problems like emotional volatility or rapid emotional changes.

Mild to moderate physical symptoms may include but are not limited to headaches, either pulsing or general, and sweating, especially the face or the palms of the hands. Your sleeping patterns may be disrupted and you may suffer from insomnia. You may experience nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. Your heart may race and your skin may feel clammy. Other symptoms are hand tremors or abnormal and involuntary movements of the eyelids.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be severe. People who stop drinking alcohol suddenly may suffer from convulsions and fever. They may also have problems with agitation and they may be confused. Delirium tremens can occur as well. There are times when a person who withdraws from the consumption of alcohol will have blackouts. This is when the person forgets what happened during a certain drinking episode.

It is usually a good idea for someone who is struggling with an addiction to alcohol to get help rather than trying to stop drinking on their own. There are many trained professionals and excellent programs available. These people and programs know the best ways to handle alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Before you try to stop drinking alcohol on your own, consider getting help. The withdrawal and recovery process can be easier if a person receives professional help. Support systems are available, too, and these are often extremely helpful.

If you think alcohol has become a problem in your life, there are ways to handle the situation. Getting the help you need and the assistance to give up the addiction will allow you to stop drinking surrounded by those who are trained to help. Going it on your own is usually not a successful and often is much more difficult.

alcohol abuse 14 Alcohol Rehab Centers

If your loved one is suffering from alcoholism, you may feel like you are alone, like your loved one is a completely different person when they’re drinking, and your relationship has been strained so much it might break if they don’t seek help.  Getting help for your loved one may seem difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone.

One way to get your loved one to get help is to coordinate with your family and friends so they are aware of the problem if they aren’t already and so they can help you and your loved one.  Your friends and family can help you by providing someone to talk to when you don’t know what to do, or they can talk to your loved either one on one or by having an intervention.  While it may be difficult to talk about your loved one’s alcohol problem, having the support of friends and family can make a big difference.

While your friends and family will pay a roll in getting help for your loved one, your loved one is going to need professional help to deal with his or her alcoholism.  Your loved one is going to need counseling, behavioral therapy and other help they can only get through an Alcohol Rehabilitation center.  It may be scary to have your loved one enroll in an inpatient or residential program, but it is the best way to deal with alcoholism.  Inpatient and residential programs will take your loved one into a controlled environment where they can deal with their alcoholism head on without having to worry about the stress and triggers for their behavior life throws at them.  Another reason why inpatient and residential programs are so successful is that they remove alcoholics from places where they will have access to alcohol and give them the coping skills they need to avoid alcohol before it becomes a temptation to them.

Your loved one may fight you and resent that you want them to seek treatment, but it is important to remember that it is only their denial talking.  Once your loved one goes through treatment successfully, they will realize that you only want what is best for them and they will appreciate the new lease on life that you have helped them receive.

alcohol abuse 13 Alcohol Rehab Facilities
about Alcohol really curious in general…?

okay so you know how rehabs take away anything you have that has “alcohol” in it as well as jails or any of those type of facility’s my question is can you really get drunk off of like say rubbing alcohol or mouth wash? i mean thats gotta taste really nasty i saw some guy sitting there drinking Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol… opinions thanks i mean wouldnt that kill you????

It can kill you but it depends on the amount drank. If he is drink it you will know when he get carted off to the infirmary.

Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into acetone. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Use in well-ventilated areas and use protective gloves while using. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption.

Isopropyl alcohol is about twice as toxic as ethanol, though isopropyl alcohol does not cause an anion gap acidosis as do ethanol and methanol. It produces an elevated osmolal gap, but generally no abnormal anion gap (though this may be seen as a result of hypotension and lactic acidosis). Overdoses may cause a fruity odor on the breath as a result of its metabolism to give acetone which is not further metabolized. Isopropyl alcohol is more potent than ethanol as a CNS depressant, and its metabolite, acetone, is a CNS depressant in its own right. While around 15 g of isopropanol can be fatal if left untreated, it is not nearly as toxic as methanol or ethylene glycol.

getting drunk 2 Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

Duration of Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

When I decided to quit drinking alcohol, the first issue I looked into is the fear of alcohol withdrawal symptoms that may occur to me if I suddenly stop drinking. The fact that it is fatal to some cases almost dampens my spirit and I almost gave up my plans and preparations to kick the habit. It is likely that most alcoholics who have been abusing alcohol have fear of the sufferings and pains he may experience when he decides to kick the habit for good. This situation can make an individual bring his decision to a halt in fighting alcohol addiction and may continue to abuse the substance that can ruin his physical and mental capabilities and bring havoc to his life in the end.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms are signs which occur in the body when an individual suddenly stops drinking alcohol after a long period of time abusing the substance or heavy alcohol consumption. Signs consist of insomnia (inability to sleep at night or during quit drinking process), trembling (hands or body shakes), anxiety (worrying about anything which triggers someone to feel depressed and unhappy) and other symptoms that are related to physical, mental and emotional aspects. The outcome of alcohol in the brain has a sedating effect if continually consume overtime. In the brain of an intense, long-standing abuser, it is repeatedly exposed to the calming effect of alcohol substance and thus the brain regulates its own system to balance the effect of the chemicals. It performs this action by means of making physically invigorating chemical in huge quantities than usual. If an alcoholic suddenly stops consuming alcohol, the brain will react and thus experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Most signs take place when the brain is over stimulated.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms may be different from one person to another. In extreme cases, the most hazardous type of symptoms takes place one hour to twenty four hours after the last drink of alcohol. Conditions may include a fatal symptom called delirium tremens also known as DTs. It has a lot of complications so one must pay attention to these kinds of symptoms. Anyone who experiences this kind of sign may ask for medical assistance to have the proper medications and treatments in terms of withdrawal symptoms.

In mild cases, there is no need to seek for medical advice as the symptoms may improve after several days depending on the alcoholic’s physical capabilities and strength. The individual will overcome the alcohol withdrawal symptoms without the help from doctors and specialists who are specialized in this kind of addiction. Mild alcohol withdrawal symptoms may not need support from support groups and may deal with the withdrawal signs by means of his personal judgments.

It is best advice to seek for professional help when dealing with extreme condition as it requires a much more attention than mild cases. Be sure to secure advice from trusted doctors to be sure of the results.

alcohol sickness 2 Alcohol Withdrawals

Deciding to kick an alcohol addiction is difficult to do. However, for many who have decided to make such a positive, yet drastic change in their lives there are possibly still more difficult times ahead. Though, not everyone who kicks alcohol habit will experience alcohol withdrawal. Those who are most prone to experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms are individuals, who have been drinking for a long time. Frequent drinkers or heavy drinkers are mostly prone. When these people stop drinking suddenly their bodies react in a number of ways, which are characterized as alcohol withdrawal.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms range from mild to severe and can be psychological and physical. Yet the levels of severity depend on the individual. Some of the most common mild to moderate psychological symptoms include, but are not limited to, anxiety, rapid emotional changes, fatigue, depression, shakiness, and nervousness. Severe psychological symptoms are delirium tremens, which are hallucinations and serious bouts of confusion, and agitation. Physical alcohol withdrawal symptoms can include severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, palpitations, dilated pupils, and abnormal or involuntary movements. More severe physical symptoms include fevers, convulsions, and tremors.

Unfortunately, alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be so difficult to deal with that some individuals start to drink again just to ward off these symptoms. Often, starting a vicious cycle that some are never able to escape. The length of time that alcohol withdrawal symptoms last is usually specific to the individual. For some their symptoms last only a few days. Yet, others may experience these symptoms for a number of weeks, and in really severe cases months.

But, even with medical assistance treatment for alcohol withdrawal should not be treated lightly. Pharmacotherapy is the treatment of disease by using medicines. Common medications used to combat withdrawal are benzodiazepines, diazepam, propranolol, atenolol, and carbamazepine. It is important to note that these types of medications are used to combat the withdrawal symptoms that are at the mild or moderate level. Yet, from time to time these medications lose their effectiveness; so, patients increase dosages and begin to form a dependence on the prescription medicines used to help decrease their symptoms. Treatments for more severe symptoms like delirium tremens are usually given at a hospital or similar setting and under medical surveillance.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms should not be taken lightly, seek medical help in order to have a better chance of avoiding the cycle of dependence.

Alcoholism is a Social Phenomenon

Monday, November 16th, 2009

man caught in red tape of tension from his alcoholismSometimes when I think about alcoholism from an unconventional perspective, I wonder how many people would agree that alcoholism is a social phenomenon.  Sure, there are thousands and thousands of alcoholics who drink alone but this fact neither focuses on what I am discussing nor contradicts my argument.  What I am talking about is this:  out of the infinite behavioral possibilities that exist, why do so many individuals gravitate to drinking when they are in emotional pain, when they can’t cope with reality, or when they can’t deal with problems?

When people face difficult situations, rather than drinking why don’t they throw apples at passing cars?  When people are experiencing a lot of emotional pain, why don’t they walk backwards to wherever they are going rather than drinking their favorite alcoholic beverage?  When people are depressed, why don’t they go and pound on a drum instead of drinking at the local bar?

The point I am trying to make is this.  Drinking is an established and routinized social activity that is reinforced by the fact that alcohol is purchased at bars, sold at sporting events, served at restaurants, sold in stores, advertised by the media, and the abuse of which is a subject that is taught in some of our schools and colleges.

When people exhibit “drinking problems,” furthermore, the drinking paradigm is further reinforced by the therapists who “know” what to do about these “problems” and how to “treat” problem drinkers in the various clinics, hospitals, and alcohol rehab facilities.

A Conservative Office Manager Gets a DUI

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

lady in red dress drinking wineTina was the office manager for a small paint manufacturing company.  When it came to partying, Tina was a staunch conservative.  For instance, no one at the office ever saw her attend the office parties during the holidays or ever go to happy hour after work.  Indeed, no one ever suspected that Tina did much of anything but work and go home to her three cats.

It must have come as a great surprise to everyone at the office when they came to work one Friday morning to find out that Tina was not at her desk.  To make matters worse, news quickly spread around the office that Tina was arrested for driving “under the influence” the previous evening and spent the night in the local jail.

After all, wasn’t a DUI arrest one of the negative effects of alcohol that happened to alcoholics and alcohol abusers and not to people like Tina?  It looks like Tina fooled everyone at work about her drinking problem but herself.

Pre-Teen and Teenage Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction: A Crisis?

Friday, November 13th, 2009

female teen with headache from abusive drinkingAccording to alcohol abuse and alcoholism research statistics, 500,000 American youth between the ages of 9 and 12 are dependent on alcohol.  A number of substance abuse studies have demonstrated the fact that far more people are alcohol abusers than alcoholics.

By “doing the math,” we can determine the following: if 500,000 children between the ages of 9 and 12 are alcohol dependent, this means that there are more than 500,000 U.S. alcohol abusers in this same age group.

The U.S. demographics will show that there are more adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 than there are children between the ages of 9 and 12.  We can conclude, therefore, that significantly more than 500,000 U.S. teenagers are dependent on alcohol.

Plugging in the numbers from the analysis above, we can conclude that more than one million U.S. pre-teens and teenagers are addicted to alcohol. and even more than one million teens and teenagers are alcohol abusers.  In sum, it would appear that youth alcohol abuse AND youth alcohol addiction are widespread societal problems that requires immediate attention from a prevention, education, and treatment perspective.

Teaching Students About the Adverse Effects of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Female Teen in Anguish From Her AlcoholismWhat kind of educational format would be the most productive when teaching students about the negative effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism?  Would the students be “open” to seeing an alcoholism animation?  Would it be best to have guest speakers who either are alcoholics or who are family members of alcoholics give a presentation about their “story”?   Should students be exposed to films and photos showing alcohol-related traffic fatalities and terminal diseases?  Would a field trip to a drug and alcohol rehab hospital be well-received by students and help them better understand the key issues?  Would the basic alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics presented with videos showing graphic details get the message across?

The subject of alcohol abuse and alcoholism seems too important to present exclusively in a textbook format.  Indeed, perhaps some of our more creative educators can come up with a teaching delivery system that makes use of several of the examples listed above so that students will be more able to effectively learn about this important information.

A Simple Experiment with People Who Are Alcohol Dependent

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I recently went on the Internet and read about some of the negative alcohol effects that are associated long-term, chronic alcoholism.  After reading the information I found online, I began to question why any sane person would continue to get intoxicated repeatedly over time.  For the sake of making a point, I decided to undertake a small “experiment.”

Let us find 100 alcohol dependent persons, tell them we are going to ask them a few questions, and then inform them that we will pay them $100 for every question they answer correctly.  Here’s the first question:  When people receive their paychecks from work, does it make sense to buy groceries and pay one’s bills before going out to party or should an individual party first and worry about paying the bills later?  The second question:  If you knew that involving yourself in a particular activity would shorten your life by up to 15 years or more, would you engage in this activity?

My guess is that virtually all 100 alcoholics in this “experiment” would know the correct answer to both of these questions, yet, unfortunately, they cannot or will not apply this knowledge to their daily lives.
