alcoholism 27 Alcoholic Behavior

Alcoholic Behavior. People who are alcoholics often exhibit alcoholic behavior such as “the shakes,” the “DTs,” loss of control, denial, manipulation, poor health, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms when they suddenly stop drinking.

How do I get my alcoholic husband to leave me without killing him?

My husband turned into a binge drinker, it started 3 years ago when he lost his job. He now has his own business. I do go to Alnon meetings. At least once a week. I am 47 years old, not in to bad of shape. I work and have friends. I live on the East cost, my only child lives in the West. I just think I am afraid of living by myself. I live in a two family house. My mom lives in her own apartment downstairs. His drinking is causing me so much aniexty, I hate his behavior when he is drunk. He can’t stay sober for more then 2 to 3 weeks. I tried talking to him, writing letter, crying, etc…. of course we fight which doesn’t help the problem. I just wish I had the courage to get my ass to the lawyer and start separation If it was another women it would have been over. If G-d takes him at least it is over.

I was married to an alcoholic for 22 years. . .I’m 48 and have a full time job. If he has no plans to quit drinking, leave him. I am SOOOO happy to be without the anger and pain of being married to an alcoholic. You won’t be that alone. . your mother is downstairs. You’ll probably have even more friends once he’s out of your life. I withdrew from friends because of my ex.

Get out now! Don’t talk/think about him not living any longer – focus on your LIFE and LIVING it. Take care of yourself. . . life is too short.

You’ll probably be in better “shape” when you leave him. I lost 20 pounds, blood pressure went down and people tell me I look 10 years younger now!

Good luck!

A Recovering Alcoholic Realizes He Can Never Drink Again

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

young man in anguish over effects of alcoholismStanley was a recovering alcoholic.  He had gone through alcohol treatment two years ago and has been sober ever since he finished his outpatient alcohol counseling program.  Lately, however, he has been feeling like his life is going nowhere and so he began frequenting a few nightclubs in the big city.  He reasoned that since he was no longer an “active” alcoholic or exhibiting alcoholic behavior, he could now drink responsibly and in moderation.

After three weeks of having a few beers every other day, he understood how easily it would be to get involved in the negative cycle of alcoholism once again.  And by looking at drinking in this manner, the one thing that he kept on thinking about were the dreadful alcohol withdrawal symptoms he suffered just before he went to the alcohol treatment clinic two years ago.  In fact, the thought of facing such intense agony and pain made him totally quit drinking–again.  As soon as he quit drinking this time he clearly understood that he was one of the unfortunate individuals who would never again be able to drink, even if he were to drink in moderation.

Is Chronic Alcoholism Always Doomed to Failure?

Lady Upset With Her Alcoholic DrinkingJacquie has been a heavy drinker for most of her adult life and for fifteen of those years she has been an alcoholic.  As her husband Kenny has found out, alcohol dependency is a disease that progressively gets worse over time.  Kenny has seen just about everything when it comes to alcoholic behavior because Jacquie has done it all.

This is what happens when alcohol addiction gets to the point of chronic alcoholism.  While some individuals perceive chronic alcoholism as hopeless, fortunately, there have been some cases of incredible turnarounds for chronic alcoholics who successfully went through alcohol rehabilitation, got sober, and attained long-term alcohol recovery.

Addiction, Recovery, and Codependency in the Family

Doctor Checking on Male Drug Detox PatientIt almost defies logic but dysfunctional relationship patterns like codependency frequently continue after the drug or alcohol addicted individual becomes sober or “clean.”  It would appear to make sense that sobriety and the recovery from addiction in the household would result in a less chaotic, more functional living situation.  When looked at a little deeper, to the contrary, the codependents may be more sad and depressed than ever because the earlier balance, regardless of how dysfunctional or damaging the addictive or alcoholic behavior was, has been upset.

The Smell of Alcohol at Work the Next Morning

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Young Man Looking Lost From Alcoholic BehaviorI remember working with a guy named Pete who frequently engaged in abusive drinking and who used to reek from the smell of alcohol the first thing in the morning at work.  Since the smell of alcohol on Pete was probably not from drinking before work, this meant that it was from his drinking the previous night.

Question:  how much alcohol would a person have to consume the previous night in order for him or her to strongly smell from alcohol the next morning?  I would imagine that the answer to this question has a lot to do with how quickly the person’s body metabolizes alcohol, but my first response to this question would be the following:  significantly more that just a drink or two.  And if this is the case, then this person is definitely involving himself or herself in alcohol abuse at the least and in alcoholic behavior at the worst.

A Television Documentary About Alcohol Addiction Signs Results in Some Fretful and Gloomy Emotions About a Young Woman’s Alcohol Related Problems

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Michelle had been engaging in hazardous drinking behavior since her sophomore year in college. Now, seven years later, she drank more than ever. One Monday evening when she was feeling a bit run down, Michelle made up her mind to stay home, lighten up, and watch TV.

While seeking to find something to watch that would grab hold of her attention, she at once became attracted to a program about teen and young adult drinking difficulties.

When Everyday Alcohol Addiction Signs and Symptoms are Displayed by Alcohol Addicted People

The speaker articulated the difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction and then got into the topic of alcoholism symptoms and alcoholism warning signs. When the commenter discussed a person’s alcoholic behavior and some of the more familiar alcohol dependency signs and symptoms that alcohol dependent individuals reveal, Michelle got quite troubled because it almost seemed as if the speaker was talking explicitly to her.

After watching the TV documentary, Michelle promised herself that she would call her health care provider the following morning and make an appointment to discuss her drinking circumstance.

When the next workday arrived, true to her word, Michelle called her physician and made an appointment. In the meantime, she went on the web and did a search for alcoholic symptoms. Especially noteworthy were the following symptoms or signs: increasing stress, sneaking extra drinks before social events, making excuses to drink at virtually every opportunity, sleep problems, and serious relationship and work-related problems.

Stated simply, due to the fact that Michelle manifested all of these symptoms she went into greater detail in her online search and found more than a few blogs and websites that discussed different alcoholism symptoms and warning signs.

One of the symptoms that really captured her attention was the following: “Do you regularly drink after making a promise to yourself that you won’t?” While Michelle never figured out that she may have a major drinking difficulty, after reading about the different alcohol dependency warning signs and symptoms, she couldn’t deny the fact that for the past five or six months, she constantly tried but was not successful at noticeably decreasing her drinking or stopping entirely.

When Friends and People at Work Exasperate You by Frowning Upon Your Irresponsible Drinking

Another alcohol addiction sign that captured her curiosity was the following: “Have people at work bothered you by disapproving of your drinking?” When Michelle read this she immediately recalled a recent argument she had with her boyfriend about her irresponsible drinking. In addition, Michelle visibly recalled a recent disagreement she had with her parents about her irresponsible drinking. Since Michelle truthfully thought that she didn’t have a drinking issue, when people discussed her drinking she of course got upset and irritated.

A third alcohol dependency symptom was the following: “Do you need a drink when you first awaken in the morning?” Until now, Michelle had been dishonest with herself about her drinking behavior. After reading about the aforementioned alcoholism warning signs, nevertheless, she knew if she was really candid with herself that she was facing a critical drinking problem, especially given the fact that she now believed that she needed a drink the first thing in the morning to diminish her nervousness.

What is more, the next alcoholic warning sign really got her thinking about her drinking situation: “Do you drink to get away from worries or problems?” When she thought about her life for a few moments, she grasped the fact that just about in every complicated situation in the past five or six months, she told herself that she needed a drink to help cope with the discord in her life.

The final alcoholism symptom that made her feel rather uneasy about her drinking circumstance was the following: “Has your enthusiasm for life shrunk since you started drinking on a regular basis?” When Michelle read this sign she noticeably comprehended that drinking had become a serious issue in her life because of her lack of energy and also because she stopped pursuing her goals and her dreams.

Conclusion:  When Getting Down in the Dumps Turns Into Something Electrifying and A Sense of Optimism

After thinking about all of these injurious alcohol dependency symptoms and signs, Michelle at first felt dejected. Then something amazing came about. She reflected on the fact knew that she was going to see her doctor about her drinking and she also knew that she would discuss all of the above alcoholism warning signs and symptoms with her. If truth be told, for the first time in quite a lot of months, Michelle honestly felt a sense of optimism because she was addressing her drinking problems and was at last ready to make the necessary alterations so that she could get back the life that was sliding away.
