After the afternoon session, residents have free time until dinner, but the treatment center carefully plans many activities so the residents never find themselves bored, with nothing to do. Every evening they can hear a motivational speaker in the early evening. Residents then have free time to watch TV, visit with relatives, or get to know new friends, until bedtime.

There’s a big difference between a DUI and a DWI. Not just legally, but financially and criminally. The only way to be certain is to know the legal limits and to take an alcohol breath test. An alcohol breath test will give you an exact alcohol to blood content, which is what the police use to enforce the drunk driving laws that are so vigilant.

Using an alcohol breath test is the most common and easy way to find out if and how much alcohol a person has consumed. In all states there are drinking laws. An alcohol breath test, usually preceded by a field sobriety test, is the way that a policeman deduces whether or not you’ve been drinking, and if you’ve been drinking excessively before or while you were behind the wheel of a car.

Once it is determined that you’ve been drinking an alcohol breath test will help to determine your alcohol blood content, or the amount of alcohol in your blood, which is used to distinguish the charge.

The difference being, usually by one tenth of a percentage, that you are either legally drunk and driving, which results in a driving while intoxicated charge which gives the stiffest of penalties, or that you are charged with a driving under the influence charge, which means you are guilty of having driven after imbibing alcohol, but that you weren’t legally drunk.

In most states these days one is considered drunk if they blow a .10, and anything beneath that, a .008 for instance, means you will be charged with a DUI. In both cases, if you are found guilty, the penalties are severe. A DWI penalty can be life altering, requiring loss of license, substantial jail time, and large financial penalties.

Of course drinking and driving accidents kill far too many people, most of whom are innocent bystanders, so penalties should be harsh. That being said, an alcohol breath test can be an inaccurate tests, and field sobriety test can be way off. You can appear drunk if you are fatigued. It is your right to not take an alcohol breath test, but in most cases the law then presumes that you are guilty.

The best way to know for certain if you have any doubts is to not drive. Get a cab or have a designated driver drive you around. If that is not possible, the second best thing you can do is administer your own alcohol breath test. They make digital alcohol breath tests and breath analyzers that range in price from fifty dollars to a few hundred dollars that are as accurate as any breath test that the police department or government agencies might use.

Some jobs require that you take random alcohol breath tests and these are usually the devices used. The fact of the matter is that it’s wrong to drink and drive and can be dangerous to you and to those around you.

The best way to avoid trouble is to simply not drink and drive. Police and prosecutors, however, rely heavily, almost solely on alcohol breath tests when it comes to drinking and driving cases. If you are involved in a drinking and driving case, it is best to have all the info available to you about the matter.

Sandi had been able to drink excessively for more than five years without any noticeable adverse alcohol effects.  She maintained her relatively high-paying job, continued dating her boyfriend, and all things considered, was living the American dream.

Things changed, however, the day she went to see her doctor for her yearly physical examination.  The first indication the doctor had that Sandi might have an alcohol problem was that he could smell alcohol on Sandi’s breath.  Not one to sweep things under the carpet, the physician asked Sandi the following question:  “tell me more about your drinking behavior.”

When Sandi explained that she frequently let her drinking get out of control, the doctor ran Sandi through a number of tests.  One of the tests revealed that Sandi had cirrhosis, a serious liver disease that could lead to a premature death if she didn’t stop drinking.

While Sandi was stunned with the news about her health, she took prompt action and asked the doctor to refer her to an alcohol specialist for alcohol treatment.  This is clearly one time when a routine physical examination may have saved an individual’s life.

Do you really believe that the many adverse alcohol effects truly make a significant impact on most adolescents or young adults?  It has been said that many young adults and teenagers think that they are bulletproof and that they think they will live forever.

How can we therefore expect adolescents and young adults who possess this type of mentality to think about the unhealthy and destructive outcomes of alcohol abuse or alcoholism before they go out drinking with their buddies?

Why should we expect young people to think about the negative consequences of abusive and hazardous drinking as they are going out to happy hour with their friends or to a bar to socialize with others on the weekend?

What is more, if most of their friends are drinking in an excessive manner and getting intoxicated quite frequently, how can we expect these teenagers or young adults to act differently than their friends and either drink in moderation or not at all?

I am not advocating abusive and excessive drinking for teenagers, young adults or for anyone.  What I am saying is that when drinking is part of a person’s lifestyle and the lifestyle of his or her friends, it is extremely difficult to change the way he or she perceives his or her drinking behavior.

Patti started to drink when she was twenty-six years old.  That’s the positive news.  The negative news is that when Patti decided to start drinking, she drank quite excessively, almost as if she were making up for the time when she didn’t drink as an adolescent or as a young adult.

Due to her abusive drinking, however, she has begun to experience a number of adverse alcohol effects.  For example, she has suffered through many hangovers, she failed an alcohol test at work, and she doesn’t have her usual energy when she gets up in the morning.

As a consequence, Patti finally decided to call her physician and schedule an appointment in order to discuss her drinking problem.  Hopefully her physician will give Patti a thorough physical exam and insist that she significantly reduce her drinking.

At this point, what are her options?  If she can’t change her ways and drink in moderation, she will probably need to eventually get alcohol treatment.

Some adverse alcohol effects receive the most news:  an alcoholic who commits suicide; a baby born with fetal alcohol syndrome; an individual who has died from alcohol-related cancer, liver disease, or heart disease; an alcohol-related murder or crime; a young person who dies from alcohol poisoning; an individual who has received multiple DUIs; or alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

These are the alcohol related news stories that usually collect the most attention.  There are, however, other, less known, adverse alcohol effects that may not make the evening news but nonetheless are equally as damaging.

Examples include alcohol related nervous system damage, system and organ malfunction, child abuse, kidney failure, and codependency issues.

The bottom line:  long-term, repetitive drinking leads to several negative and damaging alcohol effects that can be significantly reduced or perhaps eliminated via drinking in moderation or via abstinence.

Mrs. Ashton had been an abusive drinker her entire adult life.  Now that she was sixty-three years old, she was starting to experience various alcohol effects on her body.  Frankly, given her hazardous and excessive drinking, it is astonishing that Mrs. Ashton didn’t experience alcohol related health problems much earlier in life.

At any rate, she now has several health issues that are becoming problematic on an every day basis.  When she explained this to her husband, he suggested that she call the family doctor and schedule an appointment to talk to him about her health concerns and her problem drinking.  After Mrs. Ashton followed through with her husband’s recommendation, she felt like she had done the precise thing she needed to do to quiet her apprehension about her drinking problems and her health issues.

The alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature demonstrates the fact that there are numerous adverse alcohol effects when people engage in alcohol dependency or long-term alcohol abuse.  For example, the following represents a short list of some of the negative outcomes of chronic alcoholism:  an increase in failed promises and resolutions to one’s self and to others, the loss of control once a person takes his or her next drink, persistent remorse, an obsession with drinking, impaired thinking, and dysfunctional relationships.

This list, moreover, does not discuss the host of medical issues and problems that are linked to alcoholism.  The message should be obvious to anyone who cares about his or her finances, employment, relationships, and health:  if you cannot drink in moderation, then don’t drink at all.

Let’s face facts:  one of the most obvious alcohol effects is drunkenness or intoxication.  Depending on whether or not the person has consumed alcohol on an empty stomach, the strength of the alcoholic drink, how quickly the alcohol has been consumed, the person’s metabolism rate, and the weight of the person, an individual can experience intoxication with as little as a few drinks or as much as several alcoholic beverages.

The bottom line, however, is this.  No matter how many drinks it takes for an individual to get intoxicated, once that individual is drunk he or she can then suffer from various alcohol effects such as reduced coordination, an alcohol overdose, a hangover, diminished decision-making skills, an alcohol-related headache, and/or alcoholism if the person continues to get intoxicated over time.

I recently went on the Internet and read about some of the negative alcohol effects that are associated long-term, chronic alcoholism.  After reading the information I found online, I began to question why any sane person would continue to get intoxicated repeatedly over time.  For the sake of making a point, I decided to undertake a small “experiment.”

Let us find 100 alcohol dependent persons, tell them we are going to ask them a few questions, and then inform them that we will pay them $100 for every question they answer correctly.  Here’s the first question:  When people receive their paychecks from work, does it make sense to buy groceries and pay one’s bills before going out to party or should an individual party first and worry about paying the bills later?  The second question:  If you knew that involving yourself in a particular activity would shorten your life by up to 15 years or more, would you engage in this activity?

My guess is that virtually all 100 alcoholics in this “experiment” would know the correct answer to both of these questions, yet, unfortunately, they cannot or will not apply this knowledge to their daily lives.
