Considering that more than five million Americans have hepatitis B or C, both illnesses that can destroy the liver and which kill thousands of people each year, it’s clear that the little discussed organ’s time in the public spotlight has arrived.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne disease, which means that it can be contracted through contact with the blHepatitis-C and alcohol use are the major contributors to this disease. I had my license suspended in ohio for a dui. in order to get it back i need a certificate saying i completed a alcohol treatment program. When i called the bmv to see what kind of program they were talking about they we not too informative. I am already in alcohol abuse counseling have been for 5 months, completed the 3 day driver intervention program, and spent 40 days in jail. What treatment program would satisfy thier needs?

Is it love?

Scenerio: Boyfriend and I together for almost 6 years. Two beautiful children. Past 3-4 years abusive all around. Boyfriend recently kicked out of house and “realized” the error of his ways (substance abuse, domestic violence, alcohol abuse). He wanted to come back and give it another chance. He says that he truly loves me and our children and wants to work things out. Everyone who has heard the story think he’s an idiot for coming back after being kicked out, and I’m also the idiot for taking him back. He says he’s changed (not using drugs and cutting down on the drinking. He’s not hitting anymore). That fully doesn’t show that he’s changed much to me. I would like him to go away but he says that I’m hurting him and our children. I would be subjecting our children to a single parent household. I think they will adjust and be fine as long as they are brought up healthy in all aspects.
My question: Is it love on his part or that he’s got no one else?

i doubt it’s love because he has no idea what love truely is. if he loved you he would not be trying to guilt you into taking him back. a single parent household is much better than a household where one parent drinks, uses drugs and beats the other. put as much distance as you can between this man and your children. you may have difficulty keeping him from seeing the kids but you can make sure that all visitation is supervised.

That would all depend on the age and health condition of your friend. If he is relitively young and healthy then he should be fine. It’s not a pretty picture to watch someone go through something like that but in the end it’s all worth it. The best thing you could do for him is to make sure you are there for him no matter what. Right now he needs a friend he can count on, even if he needs you at three am…it’s worth the sacrifice to help him. I wish you the best of luck.

Why is “blacking out” a warning sign of alcoholism?

People without a tolerance to alcohol will usually get very sick and pass out (become unconscious)when drinking too much. Blacking out, in which the individual continues to walk, talk, etc. (although he or she may do things that are out of character) but has no memory of it the next day indicates that the tolerance level has increased, as has the toxicity level (level at which the individual has alcohol poisoning). Increased tolerance and toxicity levels are signs of alcoholism since it takes a lot of drinking (in the vast majority of cases) for these to occur.
Other signs of alcoholism include withdrawal symptoms (tremors, seizures, DT’s and even death) as well as repeated use in the face of negative consequences. Often the alcoholic will place priority in drinking while family, work, etc. become less important.

if he’s in rehab he was probably not “drunk all the time”…. in fact he was probable desperately trying to get drunk but couldnt. if you didnt notice he obviously was not too drunk, probably has high tolerance… believe you me, i have had plenty of drunk boyfriends, it will be better if he beats this thing! i am sure you are upset that he did not trust you enough to tell you, but he probably loved you too much to want to lose you.
when he gets out of rehab he will need you more!!

My step-mom is an alcoholic. She quit cold turkey 4 days ago. She was drinking Vodka heavily every day. She hasnt had very many withdrawl symptoms other than being irritable. But- since she stopped, she feels like she has a bladder or kidney infection. Is this common? and is this just “part of it”?
Shes been drinking for years–maybe its just because all the alcohol is coming out of her body?

Did anybody hear about the Lakota Indian Tribe wanting to disolve their treaties with the federal government and set up their own country? Is this a good idea for them? I understand that alcoholism is a disease/condition and that it’s defined as a person who has no control over their drinking, usually combined with depression and that abstinence is the only “cure” (for lack of a better term).

Not in a healthy way, you can turn a cucumber into a pickle but never a pickle into a cucumber. In other words; It may be possible for a true alcoholic to occasionally have a drink without great turmoil and strife, but the nagging from within will say “well, I got away with one. Suppose I have two”….Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, relapsing allergy of the body as well as an obsession of the mind. Probably the Person whom we discuss will go almost directly into a clinical depression and then years of therapy and medication will be for naught. Once a person with a diagnosis of mental illness combined with alcoholism their odds of relapse escalates 2.5-14% over a more common Single diagnosis alcoholic, which by the way has an 85% failure rate the first time abstinence is attempted.
