Alcoholic Behavior

alcoholism

Alcoholic Behavior. People who are alcoholics often exhibit alcoholic behavior such as “the shakes,” the “DTs,” loss of control, denial, manipulation, poor health, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms when they suddenly stop drinking.

How do I get my alcoholic husband to leave me without killing him?

My husband turned into a binge drinker, it started 3 years ago when he lost his job. He now has his own business. I do go to Alnon meetings. At least once a week. I am 47 years old, not in to bad of shape. I work and have friends. I live on the East cost, my only child lives in the West. I just think I am afraid of living by myself. I live in a two family house. My mom lives in her own apartment downstairs. His drinking is causing me so much aniexty, I hate his behavior when he is drunk. He can’t stay sober for more then 2 to 3 weeks. I tried talking to him, writing letter, crying, etc…. of course we fight which doesn’t help the problem. I just wish I had the courage to get my ass to the lawyer and start separation If it was another women it would have been over. If G-d takes him at least it is over.

I was married to an alcoholic for 22 years. . .I’m 48 and have a full time job. If he has no plans to quit drinking, leave him. I am SOOOO happy to be without the anger and pain of being married to an alcoholic. You won’t be that alone. . your mother is downstairs. You’ll probably have even more friends once he’s out of your life. I withdrew from friends because of my ex.

Get out now! Don’t talk/think about him not living any longer – focus on your LIFE and LIVING it. Take care of yourself. . . life is too short.

You’ll probably be in better “shape” when you leave him. I lost 20 pounds, blood pressure went down and people tell me I look 10 years younger now!

Good luck!

Alcohol Treatment Centers

alcoholism

Alcohol Treatment Centers. Many people who drink abusively and who are alcohol dependent get the treatment they need at one of the local alcohol treatment centers.

I’ve always only heard of AA for alcoholism, but recently heard about the hollostic treatment, what is this?

I’m not sure if I spelled hollostic right, but have you heard of this? Are there other methods to deal with alcoholism besides these two? Thanks for your help!

The reason you only hear about AA is that 95% of the treatment centers in the US are 12-step based–despite the fact that studies have shown that AA’s success rate is about the same as it is for people who simply quit on their own (5%–I don’t know where that other person got the idea that AA has a 40-50% success rate).

There are a number of other treatment options and recovery support groups out there, everything from the “long talk with your doctor” method to online support groups such as Smart Recovery. Such groups are not holistic as much as they are secular (AA’s basic premise is that God, or a higher power, gets you sober).

alcoholics

Alcoholic. When a person becomes alcohol dependent, he or she is known as an alcoholic. Alcoholics usually need professional alcohol treatment for alcohol recovery.

How do alcoholics not get hangovers?

I was just reading a question in another forum. This woman said she drank every single day to the point of passing out drunk. Now, personally, if I get sloshed I will definitely be feeling it the next day. The last thing I would want to do is drink again. I have watched enough “Intervention” to know that hard-core alcoholics never seem to get a hangover. I’m just a little confused as to why.

This is a great question with a lot of potential answers! The obvious answer is, some people like to exagerate their personal situation, and “every single day” may mean Friday,Saturday, and Sunday, while “to the point of passing out drunk” may mean she has low tolerance.

Tolerance! A good topic, and basically means how much you can drink before getting drunk. Our bodies are all different, but a single defining fact is we all are a victim of our own body weights when it comes to metabolizing alcohol. I am a heavier male, and it takes quite a bit more for me to get drunk than a person half my size. because of this, The added quantity of alcohol still affects my liver and kidneys, and makes me sick as it goes through. just as sick as a person half my weight that would drink as much. It all has to come out in the end.

Different alcohols also affect the body differently. Once again we are all different, and some people can tolerate different beverages better than others. One person may respond well to beer but poorly to distilled beverages, while another may be able to drink a fifth of bacardi 151 in a night and wake up peachy keen. Part may be heredity, and part may also be the act(art) of building up one’s tolerance through regimented drinking.

Hair of the Dog! No, its not a nazareth song (Heir of the dog in intended lyrical meaning despite the spelling). This just means there is an old techinique a LOT swear by that is called “hair of the dog that bit you”. meanign, you drink one of whatever you were drinking last night, but in the morning after. This basically means you drinking, roll back asleep, and when you wake AGAIN you feel better. this does not, of course, negate the crappy feeling you experience during your first waking. So I never did this, and I don’t propose you do it. Coffee has more chance of helping than this, unless there is some secret conditioning technique that makes this a clinically proven technique. Is it clinically proven? Nope!

Here’s a snip from cnn.com

“The only proven cure is to avoid “the hair of the dog” that bit you.” Article in sources.

There are also elements of our diet that reduce/eliminate hangover effects. One person may eat something greasy before drinking large quantities to delay/eliminate the onset of inebriation. I’ve heard of one guy eating an entire stick of butter prior to drinking. I personally found tylenol taken halfway into drinking will give me a head start on healing, as I sleep it off. Another possible variable involved in the answer to this question could be pace. Maybe its on how fast you drink. Since it takes time to feel the effects of alcohol, perhaps people who pace it out correctly without rushing have a beter handle on the condition. I remember a pre-christmas gift to myself about 8 years ago was a case of chimey grand reserve. That cost me about 80 dollars, but was an excelent case of abbey beer with elevated alool content. They were in double sized bottles (I think 22-26 oz, somewhere in between). The first bottle went down well, and I waited a bit. the second bottle went down, and I felt the same, buzzy, happy. the third bottle went down, and I looked at the remaining 9 and wondered how many it would take to drown my sorrows. and as I popped the fourth, it hit me. like a freight train, all at once. needless to say, I was extremely sick the next day and a good portion of the next.

So…How fast you drink, What you drink, How long you’ve been drinking, how much you drink regularly, what you take during your drinking sessions, and maybe even the softness/hardness of your bed/place you crashed to sleep it off.

That’s just a quickie diatribe off the top of my mind on the subject, delivered from the mouth of a hardcore drinker who has had his fair share of “jump out of bed, ready to jog a mile” mornings, along with a few sessions of worshiping the porcelin goddess. (although I have to admit it has been at least four years and too many bottles to count since the last time I was actually “sick” from drinking.

Alcoholism Effects

alcoholism

Alcoholism Effects. When a person is alcoholic he or she often experiences alcoholism effects.

Can a person “fully” recover from the effects of the disease of alcoholism

live a healthy productive life with no left over garbage from the disease
I’m sorry, I don’t think I wrote my question well enough to get my point across…by the “effects of the disease” I meant the loved ones who have an alcoholic in their lives

of course you can if you choose to—you are the ultimate controller in what goes on in your life.

edit to your edit–my advice still stands…both myself and my husband have alcoholics in our family but we don’t allow the devastation to rule in our family. It’s hard but you have to put it aside, not let it rule in your life as a reminder and concentrate on yourself day by day.

Alcohol Rehab Programs

Friday, January 29th, 2010

alcohol rehab programs

Alcohol Rehab Programs. People who drink in an abusive manner and who are alcohol dependent often need to go to one of their alcohol rehab programs for help.

Alcoholism is very serious disease manifested through continued drinking and craving for alcohol. It can cause numerous alcohol-related problems, such as breaking the law or losing your job, and even death. The symptoms of alcoholism include increased tolerance to alcohol, physical dependence, impaired control and craving for alcohol. Increased tolerance refers to needing more and more alcohol to get high. Physical dependence refers to the symptoms that a person has once he or she has stopped drinking after a period of drinking alcohol heavily; these symptoms include anxiety, sweating, nausea, shakiness, etc. Once a person has begun drinking regularly, we can witness what is referred to as impaired control, that is, the inability to put an end to it. The craving for alcohol refers to feeling a strong compulsion to drink.

The kind of alcohol that a person drinks, what amount of alcohol he or she consumes, or how long he or she has been drinking are almost irrelevant to defining alcoholism and identifying alcoholics. On the other hand, if a person has an uncontrollable need to drink, this is a very good indication that the person in question may be an alcoholic, especially if the action occurs regularly.

Many issues arise when dealing with alcoholism. Admitting that you are an alcoholic and wanting to get help are two very important steps forward. Joining an alcohol rehab program is nothing to be ashamed of, because it is a well-known fact that most alcoholics cannot recover from this disease without outside professional assistance.

The denial that most people manifest towards their alcohol problems makes them enter an alcohol rehab program unwillingly. Admission to alcohol rehab may be prompted by many factors, such as health problems, family issues or legal difficulties; however, in the absence of such factors, an intervention may be required in order to get someone into an alcohol rehab program. An intervention refers to the process coordinated by a specialist, through which a person with a severe alcohol problem is determined to accept the fact that he or she is in serious need of alcohol rehab.

Recovery from alcoholism generates a series of alcohol withdrawal symptoms, which most alcohol addicts cannot handle, unless they benefit from professional assistance. Moreover, treating alcohol addiction can be a very complex process, depending on a series of factors specific to each individual. For these reasons, the persons who have an alcohol addiction problem are strongly recommended to enter an inpatient alcohol rehab program.

The benefits of joining an alcohol rehab program are numerous. The most notable one is, of course, the effective treatment of an individual’s alcohol addiction. Each individual’s particular needs and problems represent a critical factor in making a choice of the most appropriate alcohol rehab program, a choice that only a specialist at a rehab center can make. Some people may even require a certain combination of alcohol rehab techniques in order to ensure effective treatment.

An alcohol rehab center can provide patients with alcohol problems with many services, according to the seriousness of their condition. A comprehensive alcohol rehab program includes recreation therapy, individual, group and family therapy, art therapy, and so forth. Furthermore, patients with coexisting disorders can receive integrated treatment that will effectively cure both diseases. The strategies used to engage patients in alcohol rehab and determine them to stay in the treatment program are also important services provided by rehab centers, as many people decide to leave the treatment prematurely, which leads to reoccurrence of their problems.

The duration of a patient’s stay in an alcohol rehab center depends on his or her particular problems; however, the typical time frame is that of up to six weeks. This may seem like a long time to many people, which is why the rehab center you choose should be able to offer comfortable treatment and relaxing conditions for their residents.

Alcohol Urine Testing

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

alcohol abuse

Alcohol Urine Testing. Many employers are implementing random alcohol urine testing to reduce the alcohol abuse by their employees in the workplace.

Who thinks there should be Drug and Alcohol testing randomly to collect welfare?

And why? I’m all for it.

i think so. The government PAYS people to be unemployed, to have tons of kids and who knows what else. I know that this guy raises his kids because they are divorced and SHE collects the food stamps for ALL the kids. its like some ridiculous amount too. She can even stock up other peoples fridges. Well fare used to be for people who are seriously in need and was even an embarrasment to have. Now, food stamps actually look like credit cards and you just slide it just like everything else. So yes, there should be. There are things that you cannot buy with food stamps but recieving a check? you can buy whatever. I also think that maybe they should go as far as a homestudy type thing that way they know exactly how your life is everyday. Anyway, this is kinda a hot topic with my family. We discuss it alot. :D

alcoholism treatment

Alcohol Treatment Programs. People with drinking problems often need professional help and many times get this help at one of the local alcohol treatment programs.

Are there alcohol rehabilitation programs wherein a family member can get involved?

I was just wondering about this since my mom wants to be able to take part in my dad’s treatment. Are there such treatment programs that will allow her to do this?

Yes, there are. I think some rehabs even encourage this. Studies have shown that patients respond positively to treatment when a non-alcoholic close friend or family member is there to undergo counseling and therapy with them even for just a couple of times. This will not only have a positive effect on the patient, it will also foster a stronger and deeper relationship between them. I think you should ask around for alcohol rehabs with programs like these. It will really benefit your dad, as well as your mom.

Alcohol Test

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Alcohol Test. Due to the increase in alcohol abuse by employees, many employers are implementing random alcohol test procedures for their workers.

Alcohol tests… how many days does it take for alcohol to completely leave your system?

I have heard that the new alcohol tests are very sensitive, that they can tell if you’ve been drinking even a week out? Is this true? I know that the new testing system actually detects a body produced ‘enzyme’ or something like that, and that’s how the test works.

yea sound fake. Alcohol leaves your body in 24 hours or less for the most part. It seems fake

Alcohol Symptoms. The vast majority of alcoholics will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms when they try to abruptly quit drinking. These alcohol withdrawal symptoms need to be treated by professionals.

how do i relieve the symptoms of gerd when i drink alcohol?

i enjoy an occasional night of partying w/friends & family but i have gerd … is there a way to decrease the extreme pain & misery i get the day after? a little relief would help.

Take a proton pump inhibitor like Aciphex, Protonix, Prilosec, Prevacid, Axid, etc. about 20-30 minutes before you start to drink.
Drink water in between.
Eat starchy foods with your drinks (like bread, crackers, etc.)

As you know, alcohol is not the best thing for your esophagus.

Good luck.

Alcohol Statistics. Studying alcohol statistics can reveal how such facts and statistics can help people learn more about alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Information on Alcoholism and Interesting Facts How much do you really know about alcoholism? You probably know that it is a very common problem, but the truth is that alcoholism information doesn’t reach people who are not in some way involved with this disease. Thus, some of the facts and statistics might surprise you a lot. • It is estimates that annually more than 100,000 deaths, just in the U.S., occur because of alcoholism. • Almost half of the fatal car accidents are alcohol-related. • An average adult alcoholic drinks approximately 2.18 gallons of alcohol per year. • The more educate and wealthy a person is, the more likely is to drink more. • Luxemburg is the country with the highest per capita consumption of alcohol. It is followed by Hungary, Ireland, the Czech Republic, and Germany, while the U.S. comes 26th on this list. • Alcoholism costs the U.S. alone approximately 40 billion dollars per year. • Teens who receive some kind of education at home related to alcoholism and learn from their parents about the dangers of drinking alcohol, are less likely to drink , in comparison with those whose parents avoid discussing the issue with them. • There are more than 100,000 Alcoholics Anonymous groups worldwide. These are some facts and statistics related to alcoholism that might astound you, because people usually think that the more uneducated and poor someone is, the more likely is to become an alcoholic, although the truth is quite the opposite. The important thing though is not what we know, but how we address alcoholism and how we deal with this alcoholism information and facts. Knowing these alcoholism information and facts, we make the first step in addressing the actual problem. It is really very important for parents to talk with their kids, especially when teens about alcohol in a friendly and comprehensive way, because that is how they can persuade them to avoid this bad habit. Especially in Northern America there are numerous resources available, which can help treat and prevent alcohol abuse. Alcohol statistics and information is not just numbers; they have to be a motivation and fundamentals for action. In fact the statistics, like the ones mentioned above, should be used as action steps for preventing several situations relate to alcoholism, such as driving while drunk. If for instance parents discuss with their kids about drunk driving telling them how dangerous it is, kids are less likely to drink. If someone is an alcoholic, then he should have full support from his family and friends; this is quite critical, as well. The good news is that treatment based on the alcoholism information and statistical knowledge is most likely to be effective in a long term basis.

Alcohol Side Effects

alcohol side effects

Alcohol Side Effects. Even a few drinks can result in alcohol side effects. And over time, these side effects can include alcohol abuse, cancer, heart disease, alcohol addiction, and alcohol poisoning.

Cancer

2-4% of all cancer cases are related to alcohol. Upper digestive tract cancers are the most common, hitting the esophagus, mouth, larynx, and pharynx. Women who drink prior to menopause are more likely to develop breast cancer. Your risk of skin cancer doubles if you drink slightly more than “moderate levels.” Some studies implicate alcohol in colon, stomach, pancreas and lung cancer. And let’s not forget the liver…

Alcohol poisoning.

Drinking large amounts can result in alcohol poisoning, which causes unconsciousness and even death. Breathing slows, and the skin becomes cold and may look blue. Don’t let a person in this condition “sleep it off.”

Heart disease

Heart disease could be another effect of your drinking. Long term alcohol dependency has been know to be the cause of high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and even some strokes. Your liver is going to be affected by all your drinking and you might find yourself suffering from liver failure or even Cirrhosis of the liver.

Personal relationships

Personal relationships will suffer. As your disease progresses, alcohol begins to take control of your life. You will find that you cannot make even the simplest decisions. You will find that you would rather spend your time drinking than spending it with family and friends. Alcohol can also make you more violent then you are normally. Most domestic abuse involves drinking as well as some child abuse cases. Your temper and patience is much shorter than it would be if you were not drinking.

Dehydration

Alcohol has been known to mitigate the production of the ADH, which is a hormone that acts on the kidney, favoring water reabsorption in the kidneys during filtration. This occurs because alcohol confuses osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus, which relay osmotic pressure information to the posterior pituitary the site of ADH release. Alcohol makes the osmoreceptors signal as if there was a too low osmotic pressure in the blood, which triggers an inhibition of ADH. Consequently, one’s kidneys are no longer able to reabsorb as much water as they should be absorbing, leading to creation of excessive volumes of urine and subsequently overall dehydration.

Alcohol and pregnancy

Women who drink heavily during pregnancy are at risk of having babies with a condition called fetal alcohol syndrome. This can result in growth deficiencies, nervous system problems, lowered intelligence, and facial abnormalities in the child. It is also called fetal alcohol spectrum disorder – all the symptoms are not always present and can vary in how serious they are.

Psychological effects

Although alcohol initially makes people feel relaxed, long term excessive use can ultimately increase anxiety and cause depression. It is also related to problems with sleeping, mood-swings, violence and suicide (about two-thirds of suicide attempts are thought to involve alcohol).

Neurologically

Neurologically there will be some side effects also. Alcohol is a toxin that is going to do damage to your brain. You may find that you have a loss of balance, loss of intellectual abilities and unable to concentrate on anything. Your hands might become numb and you may feel that you are always in a state of mental confusion.

Alcohol Related Problems

alcohol related problems

Alcohol Related Problems. People who abuse alcohol or who are alcohol dependent usually have alcohol related problems that affect their relationships, their finances, their work, their health, and the law.

How to Prevent Alcohol Related Hangovers

Nearly everyone who drinks alcohol has at one time or another has experienced the dreaded hangover. I for one had enough of them and decided to do my own research on how to avoid them altogether while still being able to have a good time. In this article I will show you many of the most effective ways to prevent hangovers altogether while still being able to have a great time. First, as I mentioned in my article on the causes of a hangover, some of the main causes of a hangover are due to dehydration, drinking too much too fast, mixing types of drinks and so on. Here we will go through the steps you can take in order to prevent or even eliminate these potential hangover-causing issues.

First, before you start drinking it is a good idea to make sure you have something to eat. By putting something in your stomach early on, it will help ‘dilute’ the alcohol that goes into your stomach which allows your body more time to effectively process the alcohol. If too much alcohol runs into your system too quickly, it will cause what I call an ‘alcohol metabolism overload’ as your body requires time in order to metabolize the alcohol. In addition to eating something, preferably dairy or fatty foods which can help prevent nausea, it is also recommended to take a couple all-natural anti-hangover supplements such as Chasers with your first drink. These supplements naturally absorb the toxins which help cause hangovers the next day. So the more you absorb, the less you have to deal with. What an amazing innovation!

While drinking it is important to remember to hydrate yourself. Drink a glass of water after each drink. Just down a glass. How inconvenient is it really? It will save you from lots of potential problems if you just drink water continuously. Also, stick to lighter or clearer-looking drinks. Those have less fermentation by-products usually found in darker types of alcohol as well as cheap liquor. The by-products, or congeners, in this stuff can really help cause really nasty hangovers. Next, try to keep in mind a little moderation. On average, a normal human body can really only process one drink an hour. So if you are pounding several an hour, your body will most likely not be able to metabolize it all quick enough. However, there are exceptions such as some individuals who have larger amounts of the enzymes that can break down alcohol in their stomach, in addition to the liver. In addition to all of this, mixing different types of drinks can also contribute to hangovers. There are many different ways this sort of drinking can contribute to hang overs, mixing carbonated drinks with stronger, non-carbonated drinks can assist in your hangover as carbonated drinks speed up ones metabolism. Harder alcohol takes a lot longer to process that that of a light beer. It takes the body a while to adjust to the different types and if is going to quickly, it will try process the harder liquor as if it were something lighter which will leave it partially unprocessed which can lead to nausea and other bad things. In addition to carbonated drinks, switching to sweeter, stronger drinks after drinking lighter drinks can give a person the impression that it is easier to go down so they pound that, too, just as quickly. Ouch. Be aware of what you are drinking and try to practice moderation. Before going to bed, remember to drink some more water and possibly vitamin B12, which is oftentimes depleted as your body processes alcohol which also causes grogginess and other symptoms. There are many more items to consider when attempting to avoid a hangover and more details can be found at our website. But, overall this should give you a good head start towards avoiding a costly hangover.

Alcohol Side Effects

alcohol abuse side effects

Alcohol Side Effects.  Drinking abusively over a long period of time can result in a number of alcohol side effects such as the shakes, the DTs, and withdrawal symptoms when the alcohol dependent person abruptly stops drinking.

Alcohol abuse effects are widespread and very dangerous for the alcoholic, which is why you need to be aware of them. Whether you are a loved one wants to stop drinking, it’s important to understand what’s at stake here so that you can be extra motivated to quit.

Some of the more common traits that alcoholism brings about are vomiting, depression, an inflamed liver, a yellow skin color, frequent illness, etc. there are many more symptoms, but the bottom line is, if you leave your alcohol problem unattended, you very easily could wind up with liver problems and failure down the road.

At this point, it’s usually too late, and it’s unfortunate how many people die because of not being able to control their alcohol problems. Of course, this doesn’t even take into account the many people that alcoholics can hurt by drunk driving, not to mention the affect on their family by always coming home drunk.

Therefore, getting treatment as fast as possible is not optional, it’s essential if you want to live a healthy life. The first thing I’d recommend to help you stop is to join a group that will hold you accountable, such as alcoholics anonymous.

There’s a reason this group is so adapt at helping people stop drinking-by coming together with other people who are trying to accomplish the same goal, it provides a tremendous amount of encouragement versus just trying to succeed on your own.

The statistics bare this out as well-the vast majority who attempt to stop drinking by themselves are unsuccessful. This is true of stopping smoking as well. Just having that human interaction during this process is vital, and should not be overlooked.

While joining AA should be enough in and of itself to help you stop drinking, I will provide some more tips that you can implement right away. First of all, knowing why you drink is essential to stopping, because it shows you the root cause of it.

While many treatment programs only focus on the physical aspect of alcoholism and how to reduce your cravings, this does nothing for the mental aspect.

Quite simply, almost certainly you started drinking as a method to help you deal with stress of some sort, and when you eliminate alcohol, it does nothing but leave a vacuum that will likely be filled by another bad habit.

However, if you understand why you began drinking (or any bad habit, for that matter) you can deal with it much more effectively.

This brings me to my next point: once you’ve joined a program and have begun to eliminate the drinking habit, it’s imperative you find something else to fill your time with. it doesn’t have to be anything fancy-just hiking, reading, or anything else that captures your interest and takes your mind of alcohol.

Hopefully this info on alcohol abuse effects will encourage you to stop drinking as quickly as possible and get your life back on track.

alcohol short term effects

Alcohol Short Term Effects. When people drink even a few drinks they often notice various alcohol short term effects like slurred speech and coordination issues.

Addiction is turning into a international concern and “alcohol addiction” is developing into a huge issue because of the wide distribution and legal property of alcoholic beverages.

The word ‘alcoholism’ has several definitions. Generally, alcoholism is the word that refers to the condition that results from the recurrent intake of alcoholic beverages. Medically speaking, alcoholism is referred to as a condition that results from an importunate consumption of alcoholic drinks despite several unpleasant outcomes.

One should not be confused with the mere drinking of alcoholic drinks with the medical descriptions of alcoholism. It is true that the definition of alcoholism is associated with the drinking of alcoholic beverages but the constancy and the quantity of alcohol consumption are the significant determinants that are used to identify whether an individual is encountering alcoholism or not.

The side-effects of alcohol addiction are categorized into two sets: the long-term effects and the short-term effects.

We all know that alcohols, most notably ethyl alcohol, are potential central nervous system (CNS) tranquilizers. The toxicity level relies on several factors. For example, the level of toxicity is lesser when alcohol is consumed after having lunch as compared to the level of toxicity when the alcohol is consumed with an empty stomach. When it comes to hydration, the toxicity level is lesser if the alcohol is added first with water prior to intake.

The side-effects of alcohol in the body are described to be ‘biphasic’. The term biphasic describes the side-effects of alcohol consumption that differs from time to time. Alcohol initially generates happiness and leisure. Too much intake of alcohol may result to blurred vision and coordination problems. Medically, when alcohol is drank, it is released to the bloodstream and is released to all biological tissues in the human body.

(A) HEART DISEASE: The people who take in alcoholic beverages are vulnerable to lots of cardiovascular diseases. Acute myocardial infarction or heart failure may take place if the alcohol addiction goes on.

(B) LIVER DISORDER: Several liver-related diseases may occur because of alcohol addiction. Some of liver diseases that are caused by alcohol intake are steatosis, progressive inflammatory liver injury, liver fibrosis, and liver cirrhosis.

(C) CANCER: Different kinds of cancers like leukemia, malignant melanoma, prostate cancer and papillary carcinoma may develop as a side-effect of alcohol intake.

(D) OTHER EFFECTS: Drinking alcohol may may develop into overweightness and fatal alcohol syndrome that develops to the disintegration of the central nervous system.

Identifying Alcohol Addiction

(1) Screening: The screenings are usually self-reports that are intended to determine the level of alcoholism addiction. The different kinds of essential screening test procedures are CAGE Questionnaire, ADD Questionnaire, MAS Test, AUDIT Questionnaire, and the Paddington Alcohol Test.

(2) Urine and blood tests: By testing the blood and the urine of the subjected person, the status of alcohol addiction may be determined. Alcohol addiction may be examined through different indicators that includes macrocytosis, Gamma-GT elevation, ASAT and ALT ratio, and CDT elevation.

(3) Others: A few procedures including the determination of the genetic predisposition or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are intended to identify the alcohol addiction status and the level of toxicity.

Same as the medical and psychological procedures used for drug addiction, the treatment in this case is also separated into two distinct sections which are alcoholic detoxification and advising. The mentioned treatment processes have to be performed at the same time. By conducting the detox treatments, the body of the person with alcoholic issues is cleansed. By conducting the advising or the intervention methods, the addictive may be persuaded to let go of alcohol addiction.

It is necessary to pass on the necessary information concerning the negative side-effects of drinking alcohol to the physical and mental system of the people to lower the number of people who are considered to be alcoholics.

Alcohol Breathalyzer Test

alcohol breathalyzer test

Alcohol Breathalyzer Test. More and more police officers are employing alcohol breathalyzer tests to screen drivers for driving under the influence.

Is it legal to give a breathalyzer to underage kids at a school function?

There’s a rumor that chaperons will be giving random breathalyzer tests to students who enter the dance. they can search our lockers of they have reason to be we’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but can they give us these tests?  I meant “…if they have reason to believe…”

Yes and no. Yes its legal for a parent to just go around and be giving Breathalyzer test to minors. But if a under cover cop or someone who is a cop is chaperoning the dance they have the right to test any kid if they have reason to believe that they are under the influence and believe they will cause harm to themselves and other. whether they will put him in jail or not I’m not sure. I think they just call their parents to come pick them up and give them a ticket for under age drinking.

alcohol related deaths

Alcohol Related Deaths. People who drink excessively and abusively over a long period of time often experience premature, alcohol related deaths. Why risk your life? Why not get professional alcohol treatment for your drinking problems?

Alcoholism is a serious problem in today’s world. The Institute of Medicine of National academy of science reveals the fact that nearly $40 to $60 billions has been spent every year due to alcoholism related problems. Alcoholism statistics on drunken driving, family, alcoholism in teens, deaths etc are discussed in this article.

Drunken driving statistics provides some painful facts. Though the drunken driving statistics continues to increase every year, many people continue to drive drunk. An average of one in every 30 minutes alcohol related traffic accident is happening in United States. At least 3 out of 10 Americans will be involved in alcohol related traffic accidents at some stage in their life time. The highest rate of drunken driving is associated with young people aged between 21 to 24 years.

Alcoholism statistics exposes the fact that drunken driving cause 10% property damages, 21% non fatal injuries and 46% fatal injuries. Mostly male drivers are involved in accidents due to alcoholism. However the percentage of females involved in drunk driving and causing accidents are also increasing nowadays. Drunk driving is said to be the nation’s frequently committed crime.

The family statistics shows that nearly 76 million people have been addicted to alcoholism in families. Nearly 6.6 million children have at least one alcoholic parent. Nearly half of the Americans reported that they have some close relatives with drug abuse problems. Young people particularly teens have more alcohol problems.

The research shows that nearly 3 million American teens aged between 14 and 17 have the habit of consuming alcohols. It is estimated that the teens aged below 15 years develop the habit of taking alcohols have the risk of becoming addicted to alcohol in future. However the risk is low for youths who do not have the problem of alcoholism before 21 years.

The studies show that 20% of suicide victims are alcoholic. One third of alcoholic deaths are from suicides or accidents only. It is a fact that alcoholic people will get frustrated soon and will attempt to suicide.

Nearly 1, 00,000 deaths in United States are associated with alcohol. One third of alcohol deaths are suicides or accidents like car crashes, drowning, falling etc. In some cases, alcohol causes cancer and heart diseases and thereby leads to death. The study shows that alcohol related deaths are more in youths.

Men have alcohol related problems more than that of women. Nearly 3.9 million women and 9.8 million men are alcoholics. The percentage of men is three times more than that of women. The highest percentage of drinkers in both the sexes is present in youths aged from 18 to 29 years. Nearly half of the Americans reported that they have some close relatives both men and women with alcoholic problems.

In the total population nearly 13.8 million Americans have drinking problems and out of them 8 million are addicted to alcohols. More than 3 million adults aged above 60 have the problem of alcohol consumption. However these problems do have some solution. The only thing need is that the drinkers must be ready to quit the habit of drinking.

Alcohol Breath Testing

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

alcohol breath testing

Alcohol Breath Testing. More police departments are employing alcohol breath testing as a screening mechanism for people who drive under the influence.

Addiction counselors use several methods to track a patient’s progress. With new Alcohol hair testing at TriMega hair testing advances, a counselor can watch the progress of a recovering addict for up to 12 months. Because the types of sensitive testing a patient’s hair sample goes through, the amount of drinking that occurred during a particular week is traceable.

A Less Invasion Way to Test Patients
Instead of urine alcohol testing, breath or saliva or even sweat testing that demands personal body fluids, alcohol hair testing only asks for a small sample of hair, taken from the scalp in a discreet environment. This is done by a trained nurse or substance health care professional who collects a candidate’s sample discreetly at a clinic or at their home. No need for random urine samples. Besides reducing the demand for intrusive body fluids, it satisfies a need for testing patients who get stage fright or “bashful bladder” under pressure.

As hair grows it absorbs everything we put into our bodies that is fed from the bloodstream. What we absorb is stored as chemical markers that are locked in the hair and show a history like rings on a tree, showing the history of time. These markers, including fatty acid ethyl esters, FAEE’s only occur when ethanol alcohol is consumed. The more alcohol an individual consumes, the greater the concentration of these markers in the hair.

Even more useful for alcohol treatment programs is testing for EtG, ethyl glucuronide, a direct metabolite of ethanol which is only detected if alcohol is consumed. For a urine alcohol test, EtG remains present in urine well after the disappearance of ethanol itself, up to five days, and with EtG alcohol testing. EtG can show up for several months after a person consumed alcohol last. The reason is because metabolites remain indefinitely in the hair shaft and cannot be removed through any chemical treatment; only shaving one’s head could eliminate the evidence.

Alcohol addiction is a strong disease, taking sometimes years to fully diagnose and treat. Once a person has been diagnosed as an alcoholic, they are always an alcoholic but that does not mean they are any less of a citizen. Continual support and counseling is needed while a person is on their way to recovery.
